Not a firearm.

EDIT; I just learned further down this page that although a pellet gun isn't a firearm in the real world, in Illinois, it is.

Yea, I've mailed air rifles before and had to wait for half an hour for the mail clerk to call a supervisor at the main post office to see if is a firearm.

You'd be surprised how many people are totally clueless.

I think Illinois has some screwed up laws on airguns

Straight from pyramid air website ( one of the biggest airgun retailers)

Shipping restrictions by location

Illinois
Airguns over .18 caliber (effective July 13, 2012: There is no velocity limit on airguns below .18 caliber, and airsoft guns are no longer considered firearms by the state)
Aurora
Foregrips
Chicago
Airguns
Airsoft guns
Blank guns
Blank gun ammo
Cook County
Foregrips
Evergreen Park
Slingshots
Slingshot ammo & slingshot accessories
Aurora
Foregrips

Most definitely. Sometimes I get depressed living in MD with our fucked up CCW laws, transport laws and handgun roster. Then I remember how fucked up a couple other states are then smile.

Wait... so what's stopping an Illinois resident from driving to a neighboring state's sporting goods store and just buying one there?

I agree, I stopped by the Sheriff's Office and turns out I can set up a range for pellet rifles in the back yard.

They're illegal in N.J.

NYC too but go across the border to Long Island with a NYC ID and no problem. Not sure about the regs today.

Illegal to bring them into the state.

Many air rifles now have suppressors built into them, one state has made these illegal. I know my Marauder sounds like a .22 with the suppressor removed. It is whisper quiet with it.

CCW: Illegal. I wouldn't live there for that reason alone... but good luck fighting the good fight

You need a 4473 for a pellet gun here in Michigan as well.

Right, but surely they don't have any kind of air rifle registration...

So what distinguishes rifles bought in the legal way from rifles bought in the illegal way?

Why do you need a 4473?

That is a Federal form

It is NOT for airguns
Link Posted: 11/23/2012 6:06:37 PM EST

We should really start destroying these useless states and removing them from the union.

They like nanny-state laws. They don't really think about enforcement. I don't know if licensed dealers there have reporting to the state.
