Brown likely goes to the W connection.

Go to the furnace and see what the brown wire goes to, 3 wire is easy, it's basically just a loop that powers it up. power from transformer to t stat, back to furnace to power it up. Green is ground.

If it's an old oil furnace it's probably just two wires that are used. There is probably a stack control mounted on the flue pipe, you should see the thermostat wire going into it. Pull the cover off and see which two wires are connected. Connect these to the thermostat Rh and W terminals. It doesn't really matter which goes on which terminal. The thermostat is just closing a switch to turn the furnace on.
