Steve Goebel, supervising attorney with the Cook County state’s attorney’s office in Skokie, said the youth took the gun, a .32-caliber VZOR semi-automatic pistol, earlier this week from the business of a friend’s father. He allegedly brought the weapon in a book bag to the Skokie high school Thursday morning.
About 11:30 a.m., as the boy sat at a desk during class, a classmate noticed him playing with a bullet, Goebel said. Another classmate saw him allegedly put the bullet into a clip.
One of the students went to a dean’s office to report the incident, and the dean called security, authorities said.
The student went back to the classroom, and he and the other witness grabbed Mikhalis’ book bag containing the gun as security officers arrived, Goebel said.
After he was taken into custody by Skokie police, he allegedly gave several statements, including that he planned to go to Niles West’s cafeteria and kill himself in front of his classmates.
A female student at Niles West told investigators Mikhalis told her he intended to shoot a girl who annoyed him and other students, and then he was going to kill himself, but added he was only kidding, the prosecutor said.
“A possible tragedy was averted here,” Goebel said. “The students who stepped forward should be commended.”
