I wish I could get the wife convinced that it's important to buy more than just what we'll shoot while on leave but oh well. |

i was just looking at the cmp site and saw that you can buy referbed garand stripped recievers. I know that the issue garand was in 30.06, but could you take the stripped issue reciever and rebarel for 308 ? I know that springfeild makes them in 308, but are the recievers different in anyway?

Quoted: remember the M2 AP $60 for 196rds? The ammo whores sucked it dry in about two days. Then a bunch of enterprising souls started selling it for a dollar a round. Capitalism. Ya gotta love it. |

I still have stacks of cans of both .30 M2 ball, and National Match ball. Was overseas and missed the great M2-AP sale

Still have an unopened SL case in my closet. That was a hell of a deal and so glad I got in. I recently found some surplus 30-06 at my local gun store, LC ball for 50 cents a round. |

The issue with .308 Garands was with the rifles converted using a chamber sleeve. The sleeve can come out on a case, leaving you again with a .30-06 chamber. correctly converted with a .308 barrel, a Garand can run 7.62 NATO(.308 is higher pressure and I don't think any .308 Winchester is safe for the Garand gas system). What takes the M1 into semi-uncharted territory is oddball conversions. I've seen baqrrels chanbered for .270, and there was a site(can't find it at the moment) where you could have your M1 heavily modified and converted to fire ,458 Winchester Magnum. The end result of the conversion looks a bit like a sporterized M14. |

You should not shoot Federal thru an M1.It is my understanding that Mil spec M2 ball is best or severe damage could occur.
This question might be better off in the Ammo forum. |

Springfield Armory Inc Garands have been built on Surplus receivers, on Beretta receivers, and on commercial manufacture (Lithgow Australia) recievers. According to Fulton Armory, Lithgow receivers are cast and badly out of spec. .308 receivers are identical to 30-06 receivers although some have a blocking device in the front of the magazine area ( a spacer of some kind) to keep a clip of 30-06 from being inserted. What the previous posters said about the .308 chamber sleeves was correct; at one point the Navy had new .308 barrels made up that didn't have this problem; however, long-stroke gas piston rifles can risk damage shooting various civiliam ammunition, the pressure curve is off and operating-rod damage can occur. Only 'surplus' 30-06 I've seen outside of CMP is some questionable 60's and 70's Iraniam FMJ carried by SAMCO and Sportsman's Guide. |

Stuff is around just keep an eye open. I stopped in a small gun shop in Western Oklahoma last year and the guy had 21/5 cases of 1961 Austrian M1 ammo. It was covered in dust and I asked him how much for all of it. We counted it and there was 2,000 rounds which he sold to me for $200 cash OTD, no tax.

Yep, I remember reading threads in their ammo forum and people were asking how much ammo they could buy at one time. The CMP said to go ahead and bring a trailer to fill it with. Not soon after the supply of M2 dwindled and limits were put on their ammo. |

It is my understanding that they were selling it at gunshows.. probably the same folks that brazenly sell CMP ticketed rifles at the shows as well.

The last couple times I've bought surplus 30.06 it was from Cheaper than dirt. I picked up some ammo cans of Chinese ammo already in bandoleers and en bloc clips for a pretty good price. I think I even saw some the other day when I went by there, but I know their name is mud around here, so you decide if you want to buy from them or not.

I don't think the CMP was naive about the AP, I think they wanted to get it out the door as fast as they could just in case Obongo/ATF decided to make a move on it. Had they done so, CMP would have been stuck with several million rounds of ammo they couldn't sell. It was a fiasco what with the website crashing and such, but it sold quickly regardless. I agree with those lambasting the resellers. I can't stand those opportunistic cretins either.

I still have a few cans of that Aus .308 that came wrapped in five round sections. $35 a can...

You can shoot that Chinese stuff in your M1, but I'm sure as hell not going to shoot it in mine. The quality control on that stuff is virtually non-existent, and the ammo is about as corrosive as battery acid. There is also a lot of Chinese M1 carbine ammo floating around with LC 52 headstamps. I've seen guys selling it at gun shows as Lake City manufacture , but if you pull one of the bullets and shine a light down in the case, you'll see that it's Berdan primed. |

If you're serious put it on the EE-it would be worth that much just to pull for the bullets-or shoot through my bolt action .308. Of course, this is not an offer to buy, just a comment that it would sell fast at that price if it actually went up fopr sale at that price. |

No $.50/rnd isn't cheap. But let's put this in perspective. A couple of years ago we were happy to find .223 at Walmart for $.40/rnd. 30-06 hasn't been issue ammo in any country for multiple decades at this point. The surplus ammo gravy train has to come to a stop sooner or later.
