NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico — An assailant opened fire with an automatic rifle on a group of people at a hot dog stand, killing two men and wounding two women today in this violence-plagued border city.

Enrique Valdez, a 32-year-old attendant at the hot dog stand, and an unidentified man died on their way to the hospital, said a statement from police in Tamaulipas, which includes Nuevo Laredo, a city of about 300,000 people across the border from Laredo.

Alicia Gonzalez, 26, and Flor Guinon, 24, were wounded during the pre-dawn attack in the city's red light district. Gonzalez was shot in the face and Guinon in the legs.

Investigators were looking for a tall, thin man whom witnesses identified as the shooter, police said.

Since January, 119 people have been slain in Nuevo Laredo. Authorities say the violence stems from a war between two powerful drug cartels for control of smuggling routes.

On June 8, the city's then-police chief was gunned down within hours of taking office, prompting President Vicente Fox to send hundreds of soldiers and federal agents to Nuevo Laredo to restore order.

A war between rival drug gangs? Sounds like a war between hotdog stand vendors to me.

Unless the hotdogs were just a cover to drug sales, I don't get it.

The victims might have been rival workers or family members..........

Probably some cartel foot soliders hanging around a local stand for some post-coital hotdogs, and the vendor just got caught in the crossfire. Think of it as a watering hole in the Serengetti, and the predators are guys doing drive-bys.

Or maybe he was a lookout; it's a good excuse to hang around the street.
