A 28-pound rainbow trout was caught in a northern Idaho river last week—which would have been the largest in state history-- but it had to be released due to state laws protecting the threatened species.

"It's the biggest rainbow trout I've seen," Steve Liebenthal, the public information specialist from Idaho Fish and Game, told FoxNews.com.

The fish was hauled in on Jan. 8 by angler Larry Warren on the idyllic Clearwater River.

Not sure if I'd want to eat that. Probably tastes like mutton.

Link Posted: 1/15/2015 6:25:27 AM EST
Would it not taste as good? I imagine that fish is quite a bit older then your average trout?

This is why I refuse to even fish during off season when its catch and release only.
I like to practice catch and release but theres no way in hell I would be able to let a record fish swim away.

I've got a 7 pounder mounted on my wall caught on a 5 wt fly rod and it wasnt a steelhead. I've also caught
a shitload of steel as well as cohos and Kings, and fished from the Battenkill in VT all the way to Alaska.

I've never seen anything even close to that size rainbow. I know what a 45 lb King feels like and cant imagine
what that fish felt like.....

Rainbow trout are a threatened species?

Looks like that fishes mom had an unusually close friend tuna that would come by a lot during holidays and birthdays. They called him "Uncle Yellow fin"

It has to do with steelhead regulations I believe. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think that in idaho trout over a certain length are considered steelhead (ocean run trout). Depending on the season and regulations on keeping only hatchery fish(this might be for salmon only) it may techically be considered a steelhead by the state fish and game.
