http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/23-are-charged-in-food-stamp-case-4685426.php

Police said Vishnunarine Singh, of Ozone Park, owner of Cheese Bakery and Grocery, and his son Elvin Singh of Schenectady, engaged in food stamp trafficking by using Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards to buy food stamp benefits at a rate less than their full value, typically 50 to 70 percent. The cards were fraudulently used to get cash instead of food items, police said, who estimate that the owner defrauded the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) of about $500,000 over three years.

Also arrested were 21 food stamp recipients who misused their EBT food stamp card to get cash instead of food on three or more occasions for more than $100 each occasion, police said. The recipients arrested are charged with misuse of food stamps and petit larceny, misdemeanors, for each alleged fraudulent transaction. Police say more arrests or civil penalties are possible.

The SNAP recipients only converted their benefits to cash because they lived in a food desert.

Allowing these hard working people to buy booze & drugs with these cards would eliminate the problem.

Wouldn't surprise if there was an app to decrement EBT cards so smartphone wielding drug dealers could take EBT.

That number stills seems really low.

Those that are 4th generation welfare recipients should be on that list.

Execute them on live tv. We need to make an example. We need a deterrent...

This is so rampant and widespread, it is almost commonplace.
Most people in Chicago know where to turn their EBT into cash.

Only when there is big money running through one guy or establishment do they even pretend to care, let alone do anything about it.

What they should do is show all of them on tv, then repo some stuff. Big screen tv's, fancy rims.. etc. Make the message simple. You cheat the system, we take your stuff.

It is way low. I bet there is close to 1 million people scamming the system in NY alone. I worked directly in the ghetto for a while and witnessed able bodied people daily receiving .gov money. I really wish more people would realize that close to HALF of the people getting help do not deserve it. They literally CHOOSE not to work. You hit the nail on the head with "generations". These people have kids and from day 1 the kids are raised with the idea that money comes from the .gov so just relax and party.

How many more scams like this are going on? I mean how often do you get hassled by FSA for cash if they buy groceries?

The smart thing to do, would be to ban them from ever getting food stamps again, or any other form of gov't assistance, time to get jobs ass holes.

Maybe we should look at saving money by just giving 50% of what we would have given them EBT, and just give them cash seems like it would cost 50% less.
