Before sexualizing pop culture figures or symbols became the new Halloween vogue, Halloween held a more traditional–and macabre–appearance. Packing their superstitions in their suitcases, immigrants to the United States would hold various ghoulish parties in hopes to lessen the terrifying mystery of the afterlife and come to grips with their own mortality as the warm days of summer had come to a close. The rich, fear-festooned mixture of multicultural trickery and enchantment soon became quite difficult for children and capitalists alike to resist.

And thus, what began as an adult’s attempt to reconcile with death and the departed transformed into an immortal and immaculate industry catered toward children seeking sweets and later bedtimes. In 2012, it was estimated that Americans spent approximately $8 billion on Halloween. Check out its more humble and horrifying origins in our series of creepy Halloween costumes from the early 20th century

Nice but a few of those were not exactly Halloween costumes.  As far as I know #12 was The Michelin Man or 2 of them.  You probably want to keep the bug man off the streets when there are kids around.

I had the ghost costume the child is wearing on the other side of the screen door in one of the last photos...1970?  1971?

The mask was scary...there was a picture on the front of the blouse of a ghost rising from a freshly dug grave...

I liked wearing it...but I remember turning the box the costume came in to face the wall in my room at night.

I have a pretty sweet plague doctor costume that I won't be able wear this year.  My gf got the mask in venice over the summer and we spent yesterday gathering up the other parts.  I don't think it is particuarly scary, but one of the dogs would disagree.  She didn't like it.

Some of those aren't too old and aren't completely 'unsexualized'.
I see ruffled wizard sleeve with a lot of hair at #13.....must be from the Nineteen Eighties

It's bacon. Naturally his costume won first prize.
