Humulus lupulus.

Its good stuff.  The 2 racks are from my grandpass bines.  The 3 gallon blue bucket is about half of one of my bines.  Its going to be a good beer making year.  Not sure if I should do a huge IPA, or use them for ales.

What the heck is a "bine"?  Is it a vine with a cold?  Are hop vines called "bines"?

Well....THC is easily extracted and used in baking, etc in the form of oil or margarine, so I would think it could be made into a beverage. Try it and let us know.

my first beer of the year turned out horrible.  infected and oxygenated.  (forgot to sanitize bottling wand and got way to much oxygen in when racking from fermenter to bottling bucket.  Last years brews were all great and once i get all new gear from the bottling end and finish building my new mash tun I should be ok again.

Great looking hops!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SWEET!!! I want to grow hops in a bad way. What kind are they? Cascade? You HAVE to do a super hoppy IPA! And then mail me some of it.
Details man, we need details!

My hops are second year bines.  I bought them from www.freshops.com  They are available around march of every year.

I planted brewers gold, cascade, centennial, chinook, Mt hood, northern brewer, willamette, and a zeus.
Unfortunately the Zues did not make it through the winter.  It was slow start on the rhizome and produced a very small bine the first year.  I should of replanted again this year, but I was hoping it would come back.  Also my brewers gold had a slow start.  Its still growing, and I doubt it will produce buds before the first frost.  The bine is only about 12' tall right now, and the buds are very imature.

I believe my grandpa has a huge willamette bine.  I picked for an hour straight and barely made a noticeable dent.  There is probably another 20 pounds of hops still on the bine.  FYI, when dry they go for around $6 an ounce.

Forgot to add,  If you buy the hop rhizome through most of the major brew websites.  They are selling from freshops.  If you buy direct from freshops, its only shipped once.  I paid 4.95 for shipping on a 38 dollar order.

I am planning a keezer build.  I am sick of bottling.  Although it does make it easier to give beer away.
I need to finish up a few other projects around the house before I can start the keezer.

They are sticky (the lupulin), they are green, and they are buds.

Nice, I'm planting some next spring.

They are crazy easy to grow.  Its basically a stick that you bury.  They you wait until summer and you have hops.   I would give them plenty of room, since they like to send up runners.  You can get away with growing them on a 6 to 7 foot trellis.  You just have to loop them over to train the bine.  During the summer, they grow insanely fast.  like 6"+ a day.  After the frost hits, the bines die and you cut them off at the ground.  They will go dormant until the next spring.

I am growing mine on a 10' pergola.  I spaced them about 5 feet apart.  In hindsight, I should of spaced them farther apart.  I also should of ran them along the back fence and built a trellis.

I planted several rhizomes 4 years ago now. Only my Tetnager thrived in my clay based soil. But, thrive they did.

I built a huge trellace and the hops grow up both sides and meet at the top. You have to stay on top of training them to keep them looking nice on the trellace. I fertilize with emulsified fish guts and a fertilizer for flowers.

My second year, one of my original bines had a root ball the size of a football! I took a shovel and split it in half and transplanted it across my yard. It's done fine. It can actually be a nusance if the side arms aren't kept under control. The netting on top of my strawberry patch looks like a camo netting over a battlefield HQ.
