As a person with poor depth perception due to a lazy eye, I would be very interested in that feature.

Or maybe just video cameras fore and aft.

ETA the video is funny.  We need a Lexus O' Truth thread.

Good point.  Maybe a Lexus will run over a kid or something.

This reminds me of a Popular Mechanics article where they were reviewing one of the Infiniti's.  It may have been the G35...I don't recall for certain.  But they were discussing the Big Brotherly attibutes of the car.

The GPS navigation system can not be used while the car is in motion by either the driver or the passenger (it can show you directions and stuff, but you can't make any changes because the buttons are locked out).

And the cruise control will not engage if your windshield wipers are turned on any higher than "very-low intermittent".

I am good at parallel parking. I'd never use the feature, though the camera in back might be handy just for reassurance.

Who needs the self-parking feature on the new Lexus LS460 when you have mad parking skills like these guys.

Besides, is more fun to do it like that than let a computer do it for you.

The year, 2008.

"A recall was put out on any 2007 Lexus with a self park feature.  The cars computers have been learning and starting to take over the cars functions at times, one owner said his car seemed "Emotional".  If you own a 2007 Lexus please turn it in to the nearest dealership for repair, free of charge."

Video won't play in Firefox... FYI.

So, isn't the system supposed to parallel park?? Not back into a parking space? Maybe it does both.  Looks to me like the last thing they did where it was going for the minivan it was trying to parallel park.

I  learned to drive in NYC, so I probably can parallel park faster than that thing.

LOW2000 has a good point.  The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the commercial was the issue of liability.  If the driver was not in control, then Toyota has to be responsible.  With "joint and several", it's the deepest pockets that get hit.  WHo has the deepest pockets?

So does my wife, but she has left so many notes on cars saying "Sorry, here is my number so I can fix your car" that she is running out of paper.

On a similar note, Mercedes IIRC has active cruise control now that will keep the vehicle in the lane and will bring the car to a complete stop in traffic, and then accelerate again once traffic begins to move.  Same concept, "I was behind the wheel, but I wasn't driving"

I thought the video was funny. And I wonder how many people actually watched it since everyone's talking about parallel parking. It might be what the system was designed for, but that's not what's going on in the video.

BMW is developing both a remote control garage parking system as well as an auto parallel parking system.

"BMW drivers will soon be able to garage their cars by remote control and boost child safety at the same time. The prototype BMW Remote Park Assist allows drivers to stand beside their car while it parks itself in their garage. The car can be reversed from the parking place with the driver monitoring pedestrian traffic, removing the risk of reversing into children or pets."

Ha ha.  Ya I think it is just a gimick to get buyers in the door.  My dad has an ES300 and though the Nav system does work and work well.  Some times it takes so long to program it, it is not worth it.

The system has two modes. One for parallel and one for perpendicular parking.

This is the way it's supposed to work:

Yes,. allow more incompetents to run around.  This adds a third to my "Two worst things to happen to Driving."  First is the automatic transmission - If you can't learn to shift, you should not put my life in your incompetent hands; then is leasing, which allows ne'er do wells to get a car with which to demonstrate their incompetence.  Now this.
