I’m coming to the end of my annual goal saga.
When I was 39, I set a goal to do 40 straight, military pushups on my 40th birthday. From start to finish, nothing touches the floor except feet and fists. Since I could already do 30-odd pushups, it wasn’t much of a problem.
I continued my new annual tradition every year except for ’92 and ’93. I pulled my right middle deltoid tendon out of the bone in Saudi just after the air war started and was left-handed for about a year. After lots of physical therapy I resumed in ’94.
On 1 Feb I’ll be 60. By now I know what it takes to stay in shape get ready for the big day. I don’t expect to have any problem, but let’s face it, this can’t go on forever.
Next year I may start working my way back down the ladder. 59 when I’m 61, 58 when I’m 62, etc. I figure if I can do 40 pushups when I’m 80 I won’t have any complaints.
Funny thing; when I got out 8 years ago, my PT profile said “not required to do more than 15 pushups”.
HA!!!
