Have a friend who has one of these cars and the key won't come out of the ignition. Anything they can try before taking it to the dealer?

That's about all I know of it.

Automatic? Did they put the car in park?

It's entirely possible that the sensor is not registering that it's in park - thus locking the key in the ignition as well. If they can cycle it to accessory and on like normal, I would assume that has something to do with it

Common problem on E46's. Pull up the shift boot (automatic trans) disconnect the electrical connector on the shifter and there should be a little plunger you can depress on the lock out solenoid to allow you to put the shifter into park and pull the key. The electronic GPS (gear position switch) and lockout solenoid are common fail points. Tell your buddy to bring his wallet and bend over...

ETA: plunger is below the green arrow on the right. There are no markings on it, I will try to find a pic that points it out.
