Here is another one for you guys to judge. From '00 to now.

Raylan Givens - Justified
Elliott Stabler - L&O SVU
Jesse Stone - Jesse Stone series
Horatio Caine - CSI Miami
Andy Sipowicz - NYPD Blue
Brenda Johnson - The Closer
Olivia Benson - L&O SVU
Robert Goren L&O CI
Nash Bridges - Nash Bridges
Mac Taylor - CSI NYC

Im sure I forgot about plenty if I did feel free to add them. Its also multiple choice.

Yes I forgot Vic Macky and Cordell Walker.

I voted Raylan, but would have picked Vick Mackey if given the choice.

L&O:SVU Elliot Stabler was the one t.v. show cop that I wanted to see get run over by a dogfood delivery truck and get draggged for miles.

I went with Jessie and Raylan.

Nash, a relocated Crockett with a little bit more mellow personality, and a funny sidekick.

Is this about the best cop from a policework perspective?  Or from a watchability perspective?

Fail.   No Vic Mackie

I'll have to go with Nash, only because you left out LT. Dangle.
I hate serious cop shows.
That's why Super Troopers and 21 jump street are two of my favorite cop movies.

I liked Stabler. I wish he would have gone postal and killed a bunch of bad guys punisher style though.

Yeah, that poll is pretty bad.  At least half of the guys are from CSI/Law and Order variants.

I voted for Nash Bridges simply because he is the only name I recognized (I've never actually watched the show though.)

I don't know any of those names.

Can we do:
Barney Miller
Jim Rockford
Mike Cannon
Adam Twelfe

^ This.  And Tom Sellek is a hard core 2nd Amendment guy so he gets my vote.  Close second is Gary Senise as Mack Taylor in CSI NY.

You're crazy, McNulty was a great character, and also a twat. But, I agree with Doucheatron3000 above, Lester was probably the best real cop on the show.

I voted for Sipowicz, though I'd hardly called NYPD Blue a 2000s cop show, it was the best of the genre right up until The Wire.

For me it has to be Lester from the Wire.

I remember watching the first couple episodes and thinking "who is this fucking guy?'

I don't think he spoke til the 3rd episode, he would just sit at his desk playing with his furniture.

Greatest show ever.
