How can company's falsely advertise like this? A local internet provider in my area is charging $100 per month for their "Ultimate" package that guarantees 1 Mbps......saying it's great for "heavy gamers".

How in the hell can they get away with that? 1mps is slow as hell.....4G service on my phone gets me something like 5mps. I'd be amazed if you could even stream YouTube videos at 1mbps without issues.

What am I missing here??

Games don't use much bandwidth, they are correct. Latency, drops and jitter or out of order packets are what causes problems.

-edit- and use lower case "b" for bits. Big B = bytes.

This. What gets home users is that multiple people are using it doing different things. Mom might be streaming Netflix while Jr. is trying to game. Then you need more bandwidth.

Total crap for people too stupid to understand what they need. I have 20/10 service but it's not guaranteed, just the maximum available at off peak times. Now if I was offered 10/5 guaranteed for the same amount I would jump on it because at on-peak it drops considerably.

Being it a wireless service you will have shit latency for gaming no matter the speed

Games only send pretty simple data over a network. Mostly just stuff like the position of other players and objects. Streaming video is more data intensive than online games.

The big thing with games is latency. Guaranteed 1mbps with a low ping would be fine.

Wireless doesn't mean high latency. It is possible to have wireless links that have lower latency than a fiber link.

No, this isn't exactly accurate.

This might explain the price, they might be installing good radios and good equipment to keep the latency very low.

There are some equipment out there available to residential customers and wireless access providers that runs in the 0.2ms latency.

You're missing the fact that your 4G cell service you are bragging about will probably have higher latency, lower priority data queuing, and data bandwidth caps. You are also assuming your phone will be able to receive everywhere where the provider is providing wireless signal. And 4g hot spot service as a stand alone service for actual residential use will run higher than $100 per month.

If you are getting 4g and you already have internet access, this service wasn't targeted to you.

The speeds listed are minimum speeds only. Many times you receive (but are not guaranteed) much faster speeds than what you pay for.

They are advertising guaranteed minimums. Unlike cable/dsl that advertise the max theoretical speed you can get, but you will only get it at 3 am during a full moon, when Mars and Jupiter are in alignment.

I have done alright on 12Mbps with casual gaming. 5 would be the minimum that I would go if I had a choice.

I had that issue with podunk smalltown cable. They were fleecing us because we had no other options. Slow speeds, high prices, shitty service. TWC moves in to town and magically speeds went up, price went down, and they're all "DEALS DEALS DEALS". Unfortunately they never reinvested their rape money into the infrastructure so they could deliver the new speeds. They tried pushing DSL where available but the upload speeds were crap.

As soon as I saw a TWC truck in my AO I switched. Haven't looked back. Say what you want, their internet works 24/7 AS-ADVERTISED for me.

Agreed, except every time you sit down to play a game you will be greeted with this message:

Downloading updates, estimated time 3 hours

Hold up, $100 a month for 1Mbps? That has to be a typo.

Played EQ and EQ2 for years on DSL, MMO's don't take that much bandwidth.

What exactly is considered "low ping" Xfinity where I am, I typically pull 4ms ping, 300+Mbps download, and 60+Mbps upload.

My experience with cable is that 87% of the time my speeds are greater than advertised. Not guaranteed, but also clearly not "up to".

It really depends on the type of game being played. I stopped playing a lot of games 5-6 years ago, so I couldn't tell ya what is considered a low ping these days.

Keep in mind, small downloads usually comes from some boost provision that the cable companies like to sell with their products.

I guarantee you that you can not max out your bandwidth on a sustained basis.
