I have a 1970 Chevelle that needs some TLC. Originally my plan was to wait till I finished college and dump some money into it, but now I am losing the storage and I could use some money for school.

I paid $2100 for the car in 1996. I haven't been driving it for a few years now.

As it is now I think I'd only get a few hundred for it, but if I put about a $1000 into it to get in running and inspected I think I could get $3000 for it.

I want some honest opinions if you think I should sell it as is or fix it and sell it.

Now about the car:

The frame in damaged were driver's side lower controll arm connects to the the frame. It needs to be welded. The low estimate was $450 to fix it and allign it.

The body is in decent shape for a car in this area. It needs paint. The quaters have been replaced (it has been painted afterwards). No dents or rust. Has SS hood. Vynal top.

I put the entire drivetrain in it myself. It has a speedshop 355. A 350 turbo tranny with a 2400 RPM stall. A 10 bolt rear with 3.73 gears. I have rebuilt posi unit to put in the rear.

I also completely redid the front suspension. HD shocks, HD springs, polygraphite bushings, HD sway bar. Even put a new steering box in it. Also new springs and shocks on the rear. It has power disk brakes.

The interior was redone before I bought the car. It has buckets, center consol, and SS dash.

Definately keep it. I also have a 1970 Chevelle. Mine is at the restorer right now. The 1970 is a popular model.  Hold on to it. You'll thank me later.

The answer is obvious, you've got to get rid of the car, even though you would like to restore it, it is going to take beaucoup of amount of money, unless you can do a lot the work yourself. And it sounds like you're kinda strapped for money.

Very rarely if ever get your money out of old cars of that class / era.
My normal advice for such old cars is spend no more than $200 for cleaning supploes and tune-up goods, plus whatever you need to stop major leaks. Things that are directly tied to making the sale.

Beyond that, really won't get any new / additional time and money out of it.

But you've described a 'fixer upper' that needs some significant work. Seems to me you'd be better off in both the short and the long run if you just sell it as is, no matter how much it irks.

That or find another long-term / cheap place to store it until you can do what you originally wanted to do with it.
