I had no idea there were that many in flyable condition...let alone in reasonable proximity to each other.  Pretty neat.

In the UK there are just over 20 flying and worldwide approaching 40 (according to UK's Channel 4 TV)

Dad saw some Spitfires up close in WWII.
His damaged bomber fell behind the return flight ( the other guys had not seen his plane go down, radioed back same) and the Spits met their plane over the Channel, near the Coast..
The pilot intercommed Dad and had him make ready the flaregun with the three-flare "color of the day" combo just in case.

the Spits came up from behind, saw the non functional engine and other damage, and wagged their wings, then came in closer and waved them on.
He was pretty happy to see them.
