I got a 10mm Ruger super redhawk and reamed the chambers to 10mm magnum.

Unlike most of my 10mm conversions where you fuckers tell me I’m crazy, the super redhawk is designed for 44 mag, 454 casull and 480 Ruger. 10mm magnum is still nothing for this frame/cylinder.

But you’re the right kind of not right.

Now, show us accuracy results with 10mm magnum, and 10mm and 40 in moon clips.

Will do. In the last pic you can see I have loaded 40 and then 10 and then 10 mag and then 40 and then 10 and then 10 mag

That’s awesome. I’ve never shot the 10 mag.

Something else to shoot before I die.

Looks like fun...will it reach .41 Magnum territory?

ETA: Read the Taffin article...a 200 grain XTP at 1500 fps is respectable indeed.

I did not even know that 10MM Mag was a thing.

Cool beans!

OP has a newsletter. Or are they just threads where we watch him convert stuff and then debate kaboom or not?

But does it go to 11?

A few companies load it. I bought already loaded ammo.

When hand reaming the chambers deeper how did you control the depth? Will your 10mm Magnum cartridges head space correctly on the case mouth without the moonclip?

Well Holy Guacamolies!

I never even knew it existed,
Now I fucking want one.
Only in a Super Blackhawk.

I'm curious about this too.
How much effort was necessary to cut?

it's cool, and no one is a fan of 10mm more than myself, but i don't get it over .41 mag.

Carefully.... :-p
Turn some, check it. Turn some check it. Turn some, check it.

Yes the 10mm mags headspace properly without the moon clip.

Interesting. I didn't know a 10mm magnum was a thing. Should fuck some shit up with authority.

When 10mm isn't quite enough and .454casull is too common. 10mm magnum!

I did not answer the second part of your question. It took about 2 hours.
A good part of that though was watching videos on taking the gun apart. When I converted the Taurus 405 from 40 to 10mm, I took out one screw and the cylinder came out. The Ruger has to be completely disassembled before the cylinder can be removed. It was not so bad really, but any time I take a gun apart like that for the first time it makes me nervous that I'll get it back together correctly, so I am super careful.

Each cylinder took probably about 70-90 turns with the reamer.
I'd do 20 turns, check, 20, check, 10, check, 10, check, 10 check, 5 check, 5 check, 3, 3, 3, and so on.

Reminds me of that old thread where some guy goes to the local range and runs into some old coot with a collection of gonzo hand cannons. Old coot was obsessed with more power. Hilarious thread.

John,

That is pretty cool. I have a bit of experience reaming auto barrels to "next size up" cartridges, and the reaming is pretty tedious. Not sure whether those Ruger cylinders use the same material as the 454's, but given that your cylinder notches are offset between cylinders, and the massive amount of chamber wall you have, I would have pretty high confidence you are safe.

Nice touch allowing for function without clips. I have a S&W 625 PC in 45 auto that does clips, auto rim, and lucked out it will also work sans clips. From what I have gathered, it is not by design, more of just luck of the draw. It is no big deal to pull cases from the cylinder individually, when just having a fun range session. You will have to keep an eye on brass trim length and crimp, but not a huge deal.

Depending on what you plan on doing with this beast, your biggest hurdle might be bullet selection. I have a bit of experience out running bullet design parameters, and thankfully the more recent developments in solid material bullet design is really mitigating this historic issue. I am not up on 41 mag and 10mm, but you may have this one already licked.

Looks like fun........

Craig

What is your preferred Load for 10mm magnum?
Link Posted: 2/5/2018 2:08:42 PM EDT
Cool project. I’m not crazy about auto cartridges in revolvers (mostly just because I’m partial to revolver cartridges), but it is cool that you’ve got a revolver that can take three different cartridges.

I’d be interested to see an objective comparison of .41 Magnum and 10mm Magnum.
