Got hit in the head with a 10 year old MRE , would it still be good? always kept in a cool dark place still sealed in the brown pouch. It's FRANKFURTERS , BEEF

Squeeze the package, is it puffy from rot? Open it and smell it, does it smell of rot? Open the entree, does it look or smell bad? Give one to the dog, did he die?

Honest, we had some MRE's (100+ cases) that were just kinda "found" when I was in the Corps. Our Supply Officer called the Army Vetinary service and they sent out a guy who did just that. Except HE was the Guinie Pig!

Just try not to ponder on the fact that MREs have a 3 year shelf life, while your chowing down.

Thats only before the taste starts to deteriorate, they're good for nutrition for much longer than that.

ISTR...

If I remember right, they weren't bad, but nothing more than a pack of probably over-priced Vienna
sausages.

If the packet is still sealed and not swollen, they ought to be edible..... notice that I did not say good!

There are two whole cases in my old closet at my Mom's house that were produced in 1998. They have always been in the Air Conditioning. I haven't HAD to try and eat one yet but you never know.

I think he's talking about his head, not the MRE. Put your head back in the brown pouch until you see the light. I can't remember if you're supposed to go TO the light or AWAY from it, so you'll have to experiment.

I ate one that was nearly 15 years old I think.. i remember getting it when i was in high school ... Tuna and noodles. It was actualy pretty good and it ha dno ill effects.....

I've eaten 10 year old MREs. Of course I kept them in the cool basement, not in a hot place. A couple had gone bad; didn't eat those. The rest didn't taste as good as new, but they were alright, and I didn't get sick.

Still have some very old side-dishes I haven't eaten yet. (Potatoes Au Gratin, Applesauce)...anyone want them? Real cheap.

I ate K-Rats dated 1945 that my dad had gotten from the Marines Corps in 1968.
When you're 8 years old....
Didn't get sick, although my mom freaked out big time.

The pineapple does not age gracefully. You wouldn't want that one after a few years. Some age pretty well.

If it's been stored properly,I'd eat it.Like was posted,if the pouch is swollen-it's bad.I have eaten some that were 10 years plus with no problems.

The chocolate never lasts though-always turns white

Hmm i think it is to , along 1993 its Desert Strom surplus.

I'll save for a few more years or until needed. I ate a can of chunky style dog food and didn't get to sick so maybe it won't hurt.

And what part do I need to check to see if its blown up.

When i deployed right after 9/11, all we had were the old school DARK brown MRE's that were over 10 years old. After about 20-30 days of eating them they told us to stop and didnt give any explanation. I heard it was because they were "expired" or only had a 10 year shelf life. We still had a shitload of boxes of them so we used them as furniture. Getting the newer light brown MRE's was like getting gold. frankfurters, beef were my most hated. especially cold.

There is a thread about this in the Survival boards. General concensus (sp?) was that MRE's will last well over ten years and still be edible, but they just might not taste as good (but usually taste fine even after a decade). The only real exceptions are the applesauce and the cheese spread, both of which teneded to get pretty nasty well before ten years.

The cheese spread and peanut butter are edible-just knead the heck out of the package before you open it.

The applesauce does go bad.

They can go much longer. At a certain point after manufacture, you must have the MREs tested. Vets (the animal docs, not prior service) take care of it. One case per lot must be tested. Going through this with the hurricane locker at work right now.

The folks that make the military MREs gave that figure I quoted above, look around and you'll find web-sites saying anything from 8 years (when stored in a climate controlled enviroment of 50 degrees or less) to 10.8 years (when stored at 60 degrees or less).

Most of the MREs ya find are already past their recommended life span before the middleman even gets them.

Your more than welcome to eat 10 years old shit if ya choose to, but IMO it ain't too brite a choice.

Personally if this sort packaged dried food is on my menu, I buy Mountain Home products fresh made from REI or some other sports store, (this way I get it fresh, ‘cus face it ain't none of them gourmet quality sustenance, but for me simply emergency rations should I become disabled and unable to hunt).

I still have some mre packs from 1990 and 91 from desert storm era. and the ones i have eaten in the past 2 years have been ok . The new stuff that i have from 2002 and 2003 is much better though, good luck

Hell, I'd eat it! When I was in Viet Nam (67-68) We ate C-Rations that had a production date of 1954. They tasted okay and you didn't have to shit for a week.
