What a joke!  I would like to see someone try and lug that thing around and maintain it in adverse conditions.  A 20lb gun?  Who thought this was a good idea?

When the guy is dialing in, the Zulu's will sneak up from behind and brain him with a club.
And to think they came up with the AR as a low weight alternative to the M-14.

Not bad if it also comes with a small LCD and wireless internet connectivity so I can visit AR15.com.

I think it would be cool if the civilian version had the option of a DVD so when cooling the barrel one could watch "FMJ Movie.

my 0.02 cents worth.

I'd love to see that guy in your picture touch off a 20mm round like that.  He'd get a face full of scope in a big hurry.  It doesn't even look like he's lined up to look through it.

Just about laughed until I cried when the pic fully came in and I saw..... a bayonet for this monstrosity.
They're going to have to genetically alter the new troops who are going to be lugging this beast around, because the troops we have now, bitch about having to carry a pen.

Shoot safe

who the hell is going to fight with that. The carry case for my ar is smaller than that thing. Oh we are going to lose the next war.

It looks like the brass can eject on both sides, so it might be ok for us leftys.

They need a small powerful camera up front and a lcd viewscreen instead of that scope.  Then throw in a small computer and ballistic program to compute you zero for you.

Apparently, this thing has "smart" grenades.Even so,the thing is WAY TOO BIG.
Especially as a light infantry weapon. You must be joking.Looks like something out of "Starship Troopers"
But this is what I think.Maybe issue it as a type of squad support weapon.

I still fail to see why they want to replace a 14.5 and 20" barrel with a 10" one. Wounding potential with the 10" is nowhere with M855 ammo. So unless they expect the infantry to engage all targets beyond 100 yards with the airburst grenades this thing is just one expensive heavy battery with bullets.
Link Posted: 4/30/2001 10:21:50 AM EDT
[#12]
How is it going to be able to do any long range work with a 10" barrel?
Link Posted: 4/30/2001 10:26:45 AM EDT
[#13]
Those grenades look pretty small, how powerful could they be? Looks like a lot of effort just to add a grenade launcher, they can put a fancy scope on a M-16.

This is to confuse the Chiness and hope to sell the stuff that would really work to Taiwan so we do not get a protest since the rest will look out of date..

Seriously,

From what I read in other sources, this baby real packs a punch with it's HE rounds and new type of ammo ... and it is suppose to give a higher Kill ratio then an ordinary M16.. etc.. I am just a messenger on this and it has been a while since I read those articals...

The 20mm rounds can be air air-burst type or contact type... that means if you're hiding behind a berm the soldier can fire one set to detonate right over your head...  Range finder is built in...

I do believe this project has been shelved recently, however.

In 100 years our "grand fathered" assault weapons will be comparable to muskets when compared to the toys the gov't has.

After studying the photo, even my vivid imagination cannot picture how you would use the bayonet.  I just don't see how you could hold the weapon any other way than by the pistol grip and the magazine ("clip").

Since there are two types of bayonet fighters, the quick and the dead, wouldn't the 20lbs tend to put you in the wrong category?  In close quarters, I fear that our troops would, in "the spirit of the bayonet", be "killed without mercy".

Anybody see the new FN rifle depicted on the back page of the June issue of Guns magazine? They compare it to te OICW but as far as I've heard there's no official competition for this weapon.
The FN weapon's a bullpup dubbed the "Convertor" that supposedly has the laser-controlled GL of the OICW but lighter. Looks kinda cool. I'll see if I can scan my copy.

The OCIW has been a complete piece of crap from day one. Just ask the guy who got his face blown off at APG last year when he tried to fire the 20mm (which is actully a rocket). I have to believe that this is a product of Clinton's Pentagon. The Land Warrior is crap too, at least for now. Bottom line, I wouldn't want to have to pray for the battery reinforcements to hurry up, leaving me with a 20lb boat anchor to lug around and try to shoot with. Maybe someday, when the technology is practical, the Land Warrior type of thing will be OK. But there can never be an excuse for a 20lb weapon as general issue. What if they let the ladies try and carry one of those around?? Jeeezzz

Last I heard, OCIW has been canned.

remember, this "weapon" gained momentum for development under the Clinton administration.

And by his own words, Clinton "dispises the military."

And with that thing as a battle weapon, it SURE shows!!!!!!!!

Anybody notice that it comes with a 30 round "clip" in 5.56 and a 6 round "clip" in 20mm.  All that money to design a weapons system and they can't even use the correct technical terms.

can the rifle{if it could be called that with a 10 inch barrel} be used without the grenade launcher?
Why would the intergrate the stock into the grenade launcher?

I can't wait to see what the Spec-ops people think of these!

This thing has to be a squad support weapon, I can't imagine it'll ever be a primary infantry arm, it's just too goofy... the 20mm grenades could work pretty well against dug in badguys if the airburst feature is set up properly, but all those electronics have to increase the fudge factor exponentially. Murphy will be riding shotgun with the first squad that rolls into combat with this monstrosity

I use that gun sometimes in DF3.

Hey wake up!!! The Idiots who dreamed up this thing have never humped a rifle anywhere but on the parade ground. I bet you the asshole who designed it has some brother-in-law who is a 4 star general. Maybe the military thinks its new soldiers will look like Mr.Universe. I finish my enlistment August 8th 2001 so thank god I won't ever have to carry that thing!!

This Discovery channel had a show about Land Warrior and all the high-tech gear.  The news often shows the same footage whenever they discuss military modernization and so forth.  Can anyone explain to me why those rangers had to have bayonets fixed on these so-called infantry rifles of the future (which are really just tricked out M-4s, btw)?  It seems out of place to have all this thermal imaging equipment that can look around corners and do all kinds of fancy shit, and then go and attach a bayonet on there so you can look more "bad ass" for the cameras.  Hilarious!

The OICW is just another attempt for the army to justify its increasingly ridiculous budgets.
They might better start building robots to fight because all the good people are leaving in droves.  Maybe they plan to export these and hope that in a future war, our troops get to fight against guys using them?  I mean, the rifle below has no sights and no stock when it is detached from that 20mm whale harpoon.

Here´s a pic of the FN F2000 Bullpup

FN HERSTAL is using IDEX 2001 to launch its new 5.56mm F2000 bullpup rifle, reports Terry J Gander. This modular assault rifle can assume several forms and is shown here complete with an add-on integrated 40 mm low velocity grenade launcher and a fire control system with a laser rangefinder to accurately determine grenade target range and indicate the appropriate super-elevation angle by a simple red/green light system.

The F2000 has fully ambidextrous controls and spent cases are ejected forwards. The fire control system can be replaced by optical or night sights, while a bipod is one option among many. The F2000 is intended to be affordable and capable of accommodating future technological developments such as revised grenade calibres. Future options could include an electronic fire rate control that varies cyclic fire rates to enhance hit probability at longer ranges.

I seem to remember reading an article last summer about the OICW. They estimate the Pentagon would be spending 10 grand per copy. And that they were going to issue them to supplement the M-16 by only having two in each infantry squad.

If you added some length to the rifle, and the ave. solder could get enough speed, they could "hang glide" over the target and blow things up with the 20mm.  We could cut bombers from the defense budget!!!!

More tax dollars at work.  I'm thinking of sending back my tax return so they can think up more things like this.

Looks like the stage prop version of the "caseless 10mm pulse rifle" from the movie 'ALIENS" - wasn't that a 10mm ?  And caseless or self-propelled rounds - now there's and interesting concept.

Damn thing looks like a version of an ugly super soaker as seen on Sat. morning cartoons that my grandkid watches. Perhaps the video is remotely controled, and the user is actually expendable cannon fodder so that some jerk off at the rear can activate the weapon and direct the one who carries it to point it in a certain direction.
