I've been seeing it all over this board and I can't figure out what it means, please enlighten me.

My best guess is that it is an acronym that probably means something bad is happening or might happen in the future.

I'm not a native english speaker and asked the same question on another board. Here is the answer:

SHTF means shit hits the fan. It is a term used to describe the time when the law enforcement agencies such as the ATF, police, FBI, United Nations, etc. attempt to confiscate the weapons guaranteed by the U.S constitution. Many feel this day is close at hand, and could possibly result in a "war like situation" Some U.S. citizens will not surrender their firearms willingly. When the day arrives a lot of people will lose their live because of the scared liberal politicians.

That is a very narrow definition. My definition is broader to include events like the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Holocost, ect.

This is the closest I've seen.

SHTF means that you've found yourself in a situation that is hostile to your survival, and that you can't rely on anyone else to take care of your survival needs.

It doesn't necessarily mean a single person; we could be talking about a group of people, but the point is that there is no "outside source" of help, supply, or guidence. You have to take charge of the situation or you may not survive.

SHTF can be initiated by a natural disaster, an economic crisis, or a political/military matter. It can be a localized event, or cover a broad area. When SHTF, most people affected will be unprepared (either by a lack of supplies, knowledge, or willingness to act), and will suffer, and possibly die.

The oft-mis-applied term "survivalists" really means people who realize that SHTF situations happen all the time, and therefore make provisions to survive. This involves learning skills, stocking up on supplies, and being armed and prepared to defend yourself.
