So there I was today at the gunshow, in the middle of a knife purchase from a dealer I know well.  I had just handed him the cash for my new CRKT M16-12LE when I get a call on my cell phone.

It's my Dad.  He sounds a little shaky, but he asks if I want to go with him to buy a new BMW M Roadster.  I kinda laugh and ask him if their on sale or something.

That's when he tells me that he needs a new one to replace the one that was just destroyed [:(]

Apparantly, he was driving near his home on a 2 lane highway that usually has tons of traffic (and major accidents).  The road has very large shoulders that people use when they are turning off onto a side street.

Well, my Dad was following behind a truck towing a horse trailer, which eased over onto the shoulder to turn.  My Dad slowed to about 35mph.  Just then, a Camaro, apparantly seeing the truck tunring onto his street and thinking it was safe to pull out into the far lane, jumps out in front of my Dad.  My Dad immediately swerves into the opposite lane to avoid the camaro, but the camaro still clips the passenger rear side of the BMW, sending it sideways into a ditch, and then into multiple rolls.

Seconds later, my Dad squeezes his way out from between the ground and the door, with miraculously only a small scratch on his face and a bump on the leg.  The airbags (side or front) never fired, nor were they needed.

The camaro driver, OTOH, apparantly suffered either a broken nose or broken teeth from his airbag.  My Dad wasn't sure what it was.  He also has no insurance.

We're pretty sure that the insurance company will total the car.  Every panel except the trunk has some major damage.  The a-pillars are collapsed.  There is most likely engine damage.  You can see the damage, and theincredible luck of my Dad in the pics below.  Not to mention a testament to the strength of the BMW frame.

I think I'll trade in my Durango on a M Coupe now [:D]

Yes.  The top was down and the side windows were up.  If the top had been up, he doesn't think he could have gotten out without it being righted or the door being forced open.

Damn, Glad he's ok.
There were a lot of wrecks this weekend in Dallas. I saw six and and a jeep spun out behind me several times.

He's in his 60's, but he always wanted a sports car when he bought this one.  He loves to show it off...just not when it's upside down [;)]

Oh yeah, never mind the Z3, get the 850i!!! I don't think a camaro could push that beast around very much.

Small update:


We went and looked at the car today.  The rear axle has been destroyed.  When the camaro hit the right rear tire, the axle instantly snapped and seized up.  I suspect that this tire suddenly stopping and the opposite tire still turning helped to precipitate the spin that turned into a roll.

So far, everybody we've talked to believes that the insurance will total this car out.  If they don't, we'll sell the thing.  We don't want it anymore.

One other thing...that fence in the picture that has been destroyed belongs to Clay Walker the country singer.  It's surrounding some of the property that he has a house on.

Just got a call from the insurance company, and the car has been declared [i]totaled[/i]! [:D]

Get this...we bought the car ( a '99 model) slightly used in December of 2000 for a price in the $30's.  We've put on about 10k miles.  The insurance just offered us more than we paid for it! [bounce]

We're getting back more for the car than we originally paid!

As soon as we get the check, we're going down to the nearest BMW dealership and buying a new one! [:)]
