why is it half birds?

Think about it.  Wouldn't you get a little tired of birds after 4 straight days, then after the 5 gold rings, you get two more days?

I mean, did people give birds as gifts back in the olden days?

Go read the lyrics to the 12 Days of Christmas.

Half of those days, the gifts are birds.

Including 4 straight days of birds, then a day of gold rings, then two days of birds after that.

Now, I have nothing against birds but I'd be a wee bit tired of getting basically the same pet several days in a row.
