I'm trying to decide between the 9mm and the 40 S&W, either with the 4" barrel.

Mostly my decision hinges on recoil. This is to be my carry gun /  home defense firearm.

ALL the polymer frame 40's I've shot have terrible recoil. (Glock, H&K USPC 40, etc)

I'm a big fan of the .40 round.

But I want to be able to do accurate double taps.

Another thing pushing me to the XD 9 is that the Beretta 92FS mags can be modified to work in the XD (i'm told) Can you say Hi-caps??

I need your advice.

I shoot the XD40. I love it. I don't really notice the recoil. It's been a while since I've shot anything smaller. I've never shot the XD9.
Xd40 mags make legal highcaps in the 9mm Sometimes the mags need a little tweek to the feedlips.

Cant comment on the 40 but my 9 runs like a raped ape. Wolf, Silver bear, Win, Speer GD's......loves'em all. Breaks down like a Sig. Lock back slide, rotate lever up and release slide forward. Can field strip in under 10 sec.

Mine shoots 3-4" at 25yds. XD40 mags hold 15 9's and function great. Where else can you buy new factory high caps for $20 bucks. That was probably one of the bigest selling points to me along with the rave reviews.

I've got an XD-9.  I like it just fine.

A little heavier and bulker than a Glock, but I do like the grip safety.

I have a .40 mag and with a little "lip" adjustment, it worked in the 9. But you only get 3 more rounds. I tried the Beretta mag idea, but it would take some extensive work to be able to fit, so I just passed on that idea.

The last 2 rounds require some force to load but will fit. (new springs) Load up 15 and let it set for a week. Will load easier after that.

Wife has both the standard and compact XD9's. Loves them. Both are great shooting guns. Ditto the .40 mags for easy high caps. Just tweak the feed lips on the .40 mags a tad to seat the rounds lower to keep the follower from hitting the slide stop before the very last round. Eveyone I have talked too has been able to fit 14-15 rounds in. EXCELLENT guns, especialy for the money.

I have both and equipped the XD-40 with one of "Dons guide rods and spring" and now the recoil of the 2 is similar.  I actually shoot the 40 much better but don't know why.

After extensive research, Tweet chose the XD-9 standard as her personal sidearm. She loves it.

It really is a nice gun, and it takes the XD-40 mags for an extra 5 rounds of 9mm in a legal postban mag.

I love mine, it's the XD9.  Yea, I get 15 in the XD40 mags with the feed lip mods.

Stay away from the Beretta 92FS hicap mags.  Use OEM XD40s with the feed lip mods.

I load up with Federal HyrdaShocks and shot just fine with them.  I've heard that even +P is fine on them.

I've been pondering the XD9 vs XD40 question myself.

I'm leaning toward the 9 because:

- Checking the stats at Remington's website, I found that a 9mm +P round delivers almost as much energy as a standard 230 gr .45ACP round.

- 9mm practice ammo is plentiful and cheap.

- My carry piece is a 9 and I find it very controllable in 2-3 shot bursts.

- 9mm is an adequate defensive round (Yeah, I know that's heresy to the 1911 crowd [;)]).  From what I've read shot placement is the primary factor in defensive situations, and caliber is secondary.

I've shot a friend's .40 Glock and it's a fine weapon.  However, I'm still leaning toward an XD9 Tactical.

I carry a XD-40 as my CCW. Its a great pistol, 100% reliable so far (1250+ rounds) And accurate enough. Recoil is not a big problem, and Wal-Mart has the 100rnd value packs for 14.97.

Yep, got one. what everyone else has said. I love it. I have a 9 due to military 9mm mags fitting in it with very minor mods.

ANyone know if Bar-sto is making a 9mm barrel for the XD 40 yet????

I just began using an XD in .357 Sig.  Spicy round.

My preferred carry is still my Walther P-99 in .40S&W.  With Corbons, the XD kicks a bit more.  Both are fine pistolas.

Either one will work...but I like to follow the axiom that given equal shot placement for the various calibers (training..training...trainin!), total round effectiveness is then my determinent.

All variables considered, total hitting force and bullet penetration/blossoming/fragmentation characteristics then help me decide which bullets to us...in which caliber.

Personally...I avoid the 9mm caliber simply because of its lower energy numbers when placed up against equivalent .40S&W/.357Sig/.45ACP rounds.

Just my personal preference, but I don't care much about hi-cap when considering home defense.  I can't think of any scenario where I would need more than the 11 in my pistol plus another mag or two...and the time it would take me to retrieve my evil black commie gun or my Mossy M590A....my real home defense weapon of choice.

Anyway...Good Luck!  I like my XD.

I have an XD9 and it's never failed in 1500+ rounds fired.

I would make sure you get the bi-tone version though as it is much more resistant to rust.

All my buds love there XD40s.  My USP40 had very little recoil, and I thought it to be about a 4" bbl.  It replaced my 92F.  Just my thoughts, good luck.

Can't beat that for fun and practice...
And 9mm recoil in a Glock 26 is non exsistent. Don't know about the XP. You can boost up a 9 but it's hard to find a soft .40 load to practice with or for wives.

xd9 here.  1k rds with no failures.  i havn't tried the hicap mags yet.

be nice if you could find the damn things!!!!!!  not a single one of my distributors has a .40 9202 in stock, WTF is up with that?  they cant keep up with demand or what?

I shoot the .40. Love it. The recoil doesn't bother me, but I haven't shot the XD9.

Get Both....

Got the 40 in the ported model.  Nice pistol overall.  Dumped a mag as fast as I could at 6' and each bullet hole was touching another.  Thats what I love about that gun.
The last time I went shooting someone looked at it and asked 'Is it for sale?'

GET THE 40, the recoil is less than a glock 22 imho.

if you get the 9, you can use 40cal mags. ;)

you can get a drop in(for the most part) 9mm barrel from barsto barrels! using the SAME 40 mags for a capacity of 14-15 rounds... i do not currently see it on their site.. you might wanna give them a call about it.

I have the 40, and i love it.. I won mine(first place novice class) at the springfield/pmc XD challenge in oct 2002, so i got to try ALL of the XD's since it was a stock(different xd provided for each of the 5 stages) gun and stock ammo comp. they are all very nice.

I recently bought the XD357, I've only fired about 500 rds with no problems at all, it has a manageble recoil that I'm already used to. I love it and carry it just about daily...I also have a Walther P-99 in .40, SIG 226 in 9mm & .357SIG and a H&K USP40, the XD is a welcome addition to my pistol family...

No way MAN! I made 4 of them in 20 minutes!! 2 for my doc and 2 for me. Dremel and precise work is all it takes.

While I dont own the 4" Duty size, I do have and XD-9 Subcompact and have shot my friends 4" .40 model. I cant tell the differance between hot 9mm 124gr FMJ in my Sub and 180gr FMJ in his .40... recoil seems pretty much the same: controlable and not harsh at all. I expect the 4" Duty or new 5" Tactical in 9mm would be like shooting a .22... easy on the arms and wrists. I have plans to pick up a tactical in 9mm, if thats any indication of how I feel about the XD series. My sub is accurate with most loads and I prefer Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+ for carry in mine and 124gr FMJ for practice. Both loads will shoot 2-3 inches at 25 yards from a rest. With my friends .40 I put two rounds in the center of the head of a B-27 target at 25 yards, after shooting only 20 rounds or so with that gun.

The .40 mags will hold 14-15 rounds of 9mm if you go that way, and can be had for under $25. Bretta mags, along with most other metal bodied double stack 9mm/.40 magazines can be modded to work with the XDs. Sights use the same dovetails as Sig 22x series handguns, so they are easy to switch out if you like.

[b]In my opinion, the XD out glocks the Glock in every aspect except finish.[/b] Now, you'll hear some horror stories about rust, but I have had no troubles with mine short of a little rust spot in the cocking serrations when I wore the pistol in a cheap nylon IWB holster while hiking for 14 hours one day last summer. I consider that MY fault for not paying attention to how much I was sweating. Little gun oil on a patch and I havn't had a problem since. Just treat it like you would a parkerized or blued pistol and take care of it like you are supposed to (the finish, from what I understand, is basically a form of parkerizing). If it suits your fancy, SA will Armory Coat all metal parts for something like $150 and they have "carry" and "competition" packages including things like night sight installation and the Armory Coat with a trigger job for $200-300. Wolf Gunsprings has a guide rod, and on the HS2000talk.com boards there is a guy named Don that makes his own guide rods. From what I hear, both work great, and let you play with spring strengths to match recoil and loads to your preferance.
