A bare barrel is best as it upsets the flow of gas the least. The M1A has a National Match flash suppressor that has had its opening altered to a larger size as to effect the bullet the least amount.

I have heard people say that a brake will reduce turbelence around the bullet after it exits, because gas from burning powder it diverted away from the bullet...... and blah blah blah.
