Many of us here in GD have participated in fitness threads and I see a lot of people doing some good work.

I've already begun my journey to 70,000 and the plan is to get them completed before I turn 44.

If you want to participate, tell us where you're starting at, and where do you want to go?

Feel free to follow along here, or mosey into Self Defense and Fitness.

I have roughly 240 days to complete 70,000 pushups.

Let's get after it.

I'm 50 and still strong in the gym. I need to do more yoga/bodyweight exercises regularly.

How much does 1 push up weigh? I need to know before I do a ton of them. You know for science.. Seriously though Just finished the Zero program from Knees over Toes Guy and got a slant board and a tib bar for Christmas. I want to get back to running on a regular schedule this year as well more light sparring in Kali class.

My last record APFT was in 2020 and all of a sudden I don’t need to do pushups anymore…

I maintain a 100 pushup a day 5 days a week. It really doesn't take that much time.

But 300 a day? Damn.

You only need to start where you're at.  If that's 50 today and 50 again Tuesday, start there.

I plan on getting back to 2500-3000/wk by July.

Last year I had a few weeks where I'd do 800-700-600-500-400.

Normal times for those days was 40-45 minutes for the higher rep days, and typically 20-25 minutes for 500 reps.

300 a day?

70,000 / 365 = 192 so round up to 200 per day.

But then again 300 ain’t bad. That’s 10 sets of 30. Do a set every 30 mins and you’re good.

I already did 3 sets lol.

 I can't answer this

I'm 180lbs and when I'm at my best, my first sets are usually 100-110 reps.  That's going to take me a little while to get back to.

But as far as what I'm starting out with tonight, my sets are 50 reps each with my feet elevated in a chair.  5 sets of 50 and I'm done for the day.

Good luck OP.

I want to keep doing push ups and plan to with my current workout routine, but that volume would wreck my 55 year old shoulders.

I don't know the most I've done but I'd guess 30-40 in one spell.

Thank you.

I know it's possible.

60k done in 2021.
70k done in 2022.
70k this year puts me at 200k over 3 years.

After that, I'll probably stick to 50k/yr just to keep myself motivated.

A couple years ago I started a quest to do 100 a day.  I was surprised, it was not difficult.  I did it for about 2 weeks till I collapsed on my face.  Not sure wtf I pulled or tore - but could not do another pushup for a damn long time.

I was doing groups of 20 when I collapsed.  I miss the days when doing sets of 100 was not a problem - but I also miss the days when I could do pull-ups till I got bored.

well done talan.

300/day is not unreasonable for me.

I'm already done with day 1's total since starting this thread tonight.

750 remaining for the week.

That seems like a good approach to allow joints/tendons etc adapt and not hurt yourself…especially if you’re not a spring chicken.

I'm 57 (will be 58 on Saturday) and I sit at a computer at home to work, so I have my rotating push up handles by me here on the floor by my desk. I will drop and do 20-30 at a time, doing several sets to hit 100-150 and have seen a big change in my chest, shoulders and triceps from it.  I try to do that full amount two to three times, and also do wide grip pull ups and underhand chin ups on a doorway bar.

I'm going to make myself do them religiously along with planks and getting back to the exercise bike for my legs, along with the walking on our short but hilly half mile lake road I do when the weather is cooperating.

I would think once you pass 100 push ups a day, doing drop sets would be far more beneficial for building strength.

I would love to do the push up challenge but...  I have a rotator cuff injury I'm lucky if I can work the computer mouse.
I will do squats instead but not 70k more like 10-30 a day and without extra weight. So I guess just deep knee bends

Well I believe this is a challenge, as far as building strength there is no point in doing sets of more than 20-ish and certainly not everyday. 100 a day of any exercise is not really for building strength, you are just getting better at that thing. It would be like doing a set of 100 squats, or 100 dead lifts, nobody is doing that to build strength.

If you can do 20 don't go to 30 if you want to build, add weight more weight and try 20 again, add weight until you can't do 20. Then do your sets and give it a couple days to repeat.

Again I assume this a challenge, not for building strength. So have at it.

I did that in my 30s and my endurance is much better at 43 than I was at 33.  I weighed 220 and could bench 330.  For what reason would that benefit me today?

I did 250 last week at 180 bodyweight.  I'd rather keep lean now.

Ultimately I want to get my bench press to +100 over my bodyweight this year so I'm going to try to add 35lbs to it in 2023.  If I am successful, good.

If not, I will get close.

You misunderstood, I always advocate for exercise. Just seems like a lot of energy expelled for little benefit. But op posted he's already in a healthy state. So that's good.

Push ups are gross. Can I do icecream sandwiches instead?

Seriously, I used to do a lot. I could plank, push, plank, push, go down into a push up and crawl, plank, push, and so on. I used to crawl under houses,  in push up form, as fast as I could go. Then RMSF ruined me. Today, one or two push ups completely wind me and no matter what I try, I make no progress.

If you’re healthy and able, you absolutely should take this challenge!

I backed way down on my push ups. I was doing them with the ROTC kids every time the Buckeyes scored and I did something like 460+ that day and I had what felt like tendonitis set in. It took about 2 months to go away. Up until then I was doing 400-500 a week in addition to lifting.
