Only one way to know for sure.............One......Two....Three....

Count out 20 or so and weigh them, then weight the whole bucket, minus weight of bucket, do math. Had I seen the bucket wasn't "full", I'd have guessed 1k less.

[#13]
There's an easy way to find out.

Weigh a similar bucket.

Weigh 10 rounds (individually, not together) and average the weight.

Weigh the full bucket, subtract the tare, and divide by the average per-round weight, and propagate your error.

LOL having a five gallon bucket of something implies that it is full,  I can throw two rounds in a 5 gallon bucket and  say I have a five gallon bucket of 40 S&W?

Anyways just joshin ya, where did you get such a bucket?  That isnt live round range pickups as implied is it?

(from the classic radio show Fibber McGee and Molly)

*Fibber is trying to figure out how man beans fit into a fishbowl to win a contest*
Fibber:  "I thought I would never get it done, but then I came up with a plan.  I took this teacup and counted how many beans fit into it, which is 230."
Molly:  "Genius!"
Fibber:  "Yeah.  I take the teacup, dump it into the fishbowl, add up the total beans which is now . . . 347 . . ."
Molly:  "Amazing!"
Fibber:  "And then I just refill the teacup like this:  one, two, three . . ."

Remember to find out the weight of the container and subtract it from the total weight, otherwise you're throwing off your measurement considerably.

Help me out here, even if I completely discount the weight of the bucket (which weighs less than a box of 50) how would that throw it off considerably?

I know for sure that 1900 rds of 357 SIG fills a 50 cal ammo can.
357 SIG ammo is basically the same size as .40 S&W, so I would guess that there is about 2.5 50 cal cans worth of ammo there. So my guess is 4750 rounds +/-.
