I was taken back at the pronouncation of the word "meme" on a recent radio commercial. The announcer pronounced it as "meem."

I always pronounced it (or read it in my mind) as "mee-mee."

My friend says "maim" and I've been trying to convince him its "meem". Where he got maim from, I don't know..

I agree with meem, but I usually say mee-mee because it's funny. I'm switching to meh-meh now though thanks to this poll.

I didn't know either.

That's the problem with the internet, you generally don't hear words pronounced, or speak them around people, where you might be corrected if you mispronounce a particular word.

I remember botching: 'plethora,' 'quasi,' and one, or two, others over the years. I still can can't pronounce 'molybdenum'...disulfide, lol

from wiki.....

A meme (/'mi?m/; meem)[1] is "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture."[2] A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural
ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to
another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable
phenomena. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues
to genes in that they self-replicate, mutate, and respond to selective pressures.[3]

The word meme is a shortening (modeled on gene) of mimeme (from Ancient Greek µ?µ?µa Greek pronunciation: [mí?m??ma] mimema, "imitated thing", from µ?µe?s?a? mimeisthai, "to imitate", from µ?µ?? mimos "mime")[4] and it was coined by the British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene (1976)[1][5] as a concept for discussion of evolutionary
principles in explaining the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena.
Examples of memes given in the book included melodies, catch-phrases,
fashion, and the technology of building arches.[6]

I always read/pronounce that as dohj, like a martial arts dojo without the second long o sound. Probably because, in my family we've been referring to the family dog as "the doge," as in "Where'd the doge get off to?"

Good.

Now for your next question, how do you pronounce "cache"
Link Posted: 1/27/2014 11:08:24 AM EDT
[#24]
Here's the etymology...rarely is a word this easy to source.

meme (n.)

1976, introduced by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in "The Selfish Gene," coined by him from Greek sources, e.g. mimeisthai "to imitate" (see mime), and intended to echo gene.

We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. 'Mimeme' comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like 'gene'. I hope my classicist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme. If it is any consolation, it could alternatively be thought of as being related to 'memory', or to the French word même. It should be pronounced to rhyme with 'cream'. [Richard Dawkins, "The Selfish Gene," 1976]
