I was taken back at the pronouncation of the word "meme" on a recent radio commercial. The announcer pronounced it as "meem."

I always pronounced it (or read it in my mind) as "mee-mee."

I didn't know either.

That's the problem with the internet, you generally don't hear words pronounced, or speak them around people, where you might be corrected if you mispronounce a particular word.

I remember botching: 'plethora,' 'quasi,' and one, or two, others over the years. I still can can't pronounce 'molybdenum'...disulfide, lol

I always read/pronounce that as dohj, like a martial arts dojo without the second long o sound. Probably because, in my family we've been referring to the family dog as "the doge," as in "Where'd the doge get off to?"

Here's the etymology...rarely is a word this easy to source.

meme (n.)

1976, introduced by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in "The Selfish Gene," coined by him from Greek sources, e.g. mimeisthai "to imitate" (see mime), and intended to echo gene.

We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. 'Mimeme' comes from a suitable Greek root, but I want a monosyllable that sounds a bit like 'gene'. I hope my classicist friends will forgive me if I abbreviate mimeme to meme. If it is any consolation, it could alternatively be thought of as being related to 'memory', or to the French word même. It should be pronounced to rhyme with 'cream'.
