Why did the US even bother to send toops to Korea in 1945 when the Russkies had already invaded the peninsula to make the Japanese surrender?

Why not leave Korea to the Russkies to handle?

You have read history books, right? The Korean Conflict has many insightful books written about the causes.

None of them explain why the US would bother with Korea in the first place in 1945.

Read up on Dean Rusk.  The Russians had already invaded Korea at the end of WW2. We let them keep some to appease them.
Eta: but we didn't want them to have the whole shooting match.

Why is that though?

There was no Cold War then.

We should have never sent troops there.

Thanks

I did not know Yalta dealt with Korea.

I will research that.

The Russians weren't really our allies and we knew it.  They knew it, too.   Their only utility was opening up another front.

Long story short: Japan folded much faster than expected and though Roosevelt wanted Stalin to fight Japan to draw off the troops in Manchuria so that they could not be used to reinforce Japan, when it looked like Stalin might end up with Korea and a chunk of China too the U.S. decided they needed a bifurcated Korea so that the Soviets wouldn't be right next to Japan.
The original plan was Korea was to be a trusteeship for decades, somewhat like Germany was divided into zones of occupation. Something to be mindful of is that Korea had been under Japanese occupation and was quite shaky politically and economically to say the least. The only importance it had was proximity to Japan.
