Because the Americans did not want communism to spread.
At the time China was not yet communist ,the Americans and British already barge I Ed away Eastern Europe to the Soviets at Malta or was it Tehran |

You have read history books, right? The Korean Conflict has many insightful books written about the causes.

Read up on Dean Rusk. The Russians had already invaded Korea at the end of WW2. We let them keep some to appease them.
Eta: but we didn't want them to have the whole shooting match. |

Their only utility was opening up another front. |

Long story short: Japan folded much faster than expected and though Roosevelt wanted Stalin to fight Japan to draw off the troops in Manchuria so that they could not be used to reinforce Japan,when it looked like Stalin might end up with Korea and a chunk of China too the U.S. decided they needed a bifurcated Korea so that the Soviets wouldn't be right next to Japan.
The original plan was Korea was to be a trusteeship for decades,somewhat like Germany was divided into zones of occupation. Something to be mindful of is that Korea had been under Japanese occupation and was quite shaky politically and economically to say the least. The only importance it had was proximity to Japan.
