All foward shifts good to go. When hot will not back up. Any one of you might know something I may do to avoid a $1000 rebuild job? I have heard of adding some brake fluid might swell the seals some, what the heck. anything might be worth a try.

A teaspoon of brake fluid will help with seals.  Are you sure the ATF fluid is at the proper level?  Ford trannies are sensitive if even just a little low when it comes to reverse gear working but that usually is more an issue when cold.  Had it serviced lately with a new filter?  Worth a shot if not before spending $$$$ on major repair.  That will also let you know how much clutch material and debris is in the pan.

Step 1: remove transmission that's run by fairies and unicorns.

Step 2: install proper transmission and third pedal.

Problem solved. Problem staying solved.
