You've got $10,000 saved up to purchase an un-molested sporty type of car. What do you buy? Car is for personal enjoyment & transportation... Not specifically used for autocross or drag racing.

Apologies for running out of choices....I missed a couple of good ones like the Nissan 240/280/300, Acura RSX, Audi S4, and Suburu WRX. And I should have made option#10 a Porsche 951 instead of the 944 model.

I don't want to confine this poll to the textbook definition of a sports car.  Just "sporty type", use your own interpretation.

while I would argue that not all of these are sports cars. This is what google turned up as a starting point

Well this is tough. 60's muscle is tops, but what can you get for $10,000 and what will it take to keep it running?

For a modern car, I would go Miata. A big enthusiast base means lots of parts and aftermarket stuff for long after your particular model is out of production.

Mustang 5.0. Fox body coupe, white with a not-red interior? I would probably go with this.

Why not let the OP of the other thread make a poll.

And you already know what's going to win...

It all depends upon what you want to do with your "sporty-type" car. Autocross? Track Days? Drag race? Cruise? All of the above?

Define your usage better and some cars make more sense than others.

That would depend entirely on what I was planning on doing with it.

I could make a good argument for most of the cars in your poll, depending on what my intended use was.

I picked miata because many of those other cars would be in terrible condition if priced at $10k.  Your options increase if you can spend more.

Exactly.

You can get a minty Miata, or a ragged out S2000 AP1, or an automatic C5.

I'd like to see some links to these mythical sub-$10K cars.

I picked the Miata.  I traded my Mustang GT in the other week on a F150, so I am kinda wanting a cheap toy car to play with and the Miata is very attractive with its low cost and aftermarket.

I'm enjoying my 2001 3.0 Z3. There are a lot of little issues but once you get them resolved they will be a pretty reliable and very fun car not to mention fairly quick. It'll run right with an older gen Mustang GT in a straight line and corner with a Miata. Really the only big issue is the subframe problems that can pop up. I had one of my spot weld start cracking which I tacked up and so far it's holding just fine.

One choice not in the poll to be considered:  an early 2000's Subaru WRX.  220+hp turbo 4-banger, super quick, and good high end speed as well.  not the most comfy ride, but that probably doesn't matter much when your adrenaline is jacked.  lol

Well I looked for 3 minutes and found 3 cars at $11k. I am sure I could find more than a few sub-$10k if I wanted to.  Remember, cash in hand will always get a lower price with a serious seller.

The biggest problem with Corvette sellers, is that they cannot accept the fact that their car has depreciated. The majority of the owners over price their cars, and they sit for months and months without selling.

I have a Mazda RX8.
Very nice interior, pretty quick with it's 9,000 rpm redline too. It handles excellently, and you don't see them every day. Fuel economy is not great, but if you are going for a sporty car, none of them are going to be great unless you buy a Tesla.

I'd recommend it. RX7 could also be good, but you'll have a lot more problems with parts breaking on those and replacement parts being expensive. But they are far and away faster than the RX8, for obvious reasons.

Fire sale prices from your neighbor/friend/cousin/uncle/grandpappy/etc where you throw out some ridiculous low ball offer and they take it because they're desperate for cash...those are not market prices at which you can just go buy one today.  So, the car I pick from the list really isn't even a contender due to the $10k price limit.

Second gen Mazda RX7 turbos can be had in really good shape for $4-6k (pretty good for $3k), spend the other $4-6k on maintenance that was probably not done and reliability mods (aluminum radiator, better coolant hoses and vacuum lines, etc).

60's muscle (pony) for me. You could find a 65-68 Mustang with a 289/302 and a 4-speed for $10K that will only go up in value. Parts are plentiful and they are cheap to maintain. No $200 electric fuel pumps, $1000 turbos etc..

They're cheap and handle pretty good.  That doesn't mean I'd pick one over something like a C5 vette or Porsche 951 if I have the money to buy and maintain those.

I think I just don't care.  Being popular as a cheap track car doesn't make them the best, or anything close to it.

Got mine for 13k almost 8 years ago. 25k miles, ran great, two owners, no problems. Though I really lucked out. Dude I got it from was getting rid of it cause he was having a baby and needed a bigger car. He had gotten it from an old woman who had no idea what she had, (was her husbands, and I believe he was 'no longer in the picture' ).

Prices are actually going up on them now. They've bottomed out and have moved into "collector car" status, like the NSX has. Unless they're a disaster or a salvage title you're not getting one under $10k.
