I do it all the time. I hate driving to Vegas in the daytime. I always top the gas off in Barstow. I never stop in Baker.

I had someone fall asleep right after passing me, and their car tumbled by when they over corrected. Saw the underside of their car through my passenger window.
I think a real danger is tired people driving back from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Also once there's one accdient on that road, it tends to back up for a long time. |

When I was stationed in Vegas I would make that round-trip drive at least twice a month to go visit my parents. I have made it several times since leaving Vegas (MIL lives in Vegas and we fly in there because its usually cheaper then Cali airports) and have always tried to make a night time trip. Drive at night, it's much cooler, and unless you like looking at desert scenery, there is not much to see. If you do it at night, the later the better, but if you make the trip on a fight night it really doesn't matter, traffic will suck anyway. And last time I drove it, I had cellphone reception the whole way, so you can always make a call if you run into trouble but that doesn't mean help will arrive anytime soon.
Take some water and snacks, that should get you through to Vegas. |

Drove in the middle of the night from Vegas to the Grand Canyon with Wolfpack. Not dangerous other than the risk of falling asleep. Long straight roads with next to no traffic, could see shooting stars, that was cool as shit. Not sure why it would be dangerous coming in from LA. I mean once you LEAVE LA.

not so bad. if you use a rental car from hertz with neverlost, it'll get you LOST
AS F*** around bakers field and tell you to drive around in a field for a while cuase someone moved the road, but eventually you'll find the right way. I went from San Jose through LA and to Vegas once a couple years ago. LOONG drive but made it fine. |

Thousands of people have died on that road (I-15 between SoCal and Las Vegas).
I have seen hundreds of them. As many as 12 at once. I have done dozens of extrications on that road. Keep it under 100 mph, and don't go to sleep. |

Whats the problem ? Fill up with gas in LA, you may not even need to stop. Also bring a gun, can't you legally have one in the trunk in a case ? Yes somewhat useless, but if you break down in the desert you will be glad you had it Bring flashlights, water, blankets, cell phone. Nothing to worry about. |

Don't stop in the rest areas, they're real weird at night. Buy gas in Barstow if you need it. Carrying a handgun in your car is only illegal if you get caught. In 30 years, I never have been. YMMV.

Let me get this straight... You're going to drive through the desert at night with your family...unarmed? I'm honestly confused by many of the replies posted here. From what I have seen in various threads most Arfcommers pack heat when they run to the grocery store to buy a gallon of milk, yet some are giving the OP a ration of shit for being concerned about a nearly 300 mile journey through the desert at night. Wonders never cease. If you break down at night 75 miles from no where in the desert you're going to wish you'd had some iron in your vehicle, if not on your person. Do not stop for gas in Baker, very expensive. Also, I think you said you were going in March, but if I read that wrong and you are going pretty soon they are doing construction on the top of mountain pass (the hill that drops you down into Nev) at night and it can get very backed up. Take some food and water if there is an accident it can literally stop traffic for hours, seen it many times.

Easy drive. The roads are well maintained, straight and wide, and have the cat-eye reflectors in the lane markers. The biggest worry are cars doing +40 mph over the limit, blue hairs going home doing +20 miles under the limit, and smokey watching for both. I stick the cruise control at 80-85 mph and put the volume control to 11.
