Dude, you can legally carry a loaded longarm in public in Texas. It's intended mostly so you can have it in a gun rack in your truck or something, so don't think you can walk around with an AR slung on your back and not get arrested for disturbing the peace or something.

In Virginia you can, if you hold a concealed carry permit.  Even out state CHL holders that have reciprocity with VA can too.

So in TX I can travel with my CHL and have a loaded AR in the trunk of the car.  I believe I was told at my CHL class that I specifically could not do this.  The instructor responded, "It's a concealed HANDGUN license, not a concealed firearm license."  But it has been a few years so perhaps I'm confused.

You don't need a CHL to carry a loaded longarm in your vehicle or on your person, anywhere in Texas. You also don't need a CHL to keep a loaded handgun in your vehicle and in easy reach, so long as it is out of sight.

Reducing "Gun Crimes" is doublespeak. If a person is killed does it make it better if gun is not used? When guns were initially banned in England, the murder rate didn't go down. However, the GUN murder rate briefly did. If this a Victory? The same number of people were killed. But less were killed by guns.

Since that time Illegal handguns have become such a problem the British papers have special sections on their websites dedicated to gun crimes. Proving that societies will 100% bans on handguns can't enforce them. Criminal elements were selling them on the street corners. All England did was make the victims unarmed.

Look to the city which has won the title of "Murder capital of the US", Washington DC, you want an American example of how Gun Control allows criminals free reign.
