It seems that nearly every week someone starts a thread asking for a bourbon recommendation, to ask what others are drinking, etc. I thought it would be nice to have an ongoing thread where people can ask questions, post pictures, share information, reviews and more.
Tonight, I’m starting off by finishing off the last of a bottle of an entry level bourbon, Old Forester 86 proof. I keep quite a few varieties on hand including a couple lower proof budget bourbon for making cocktails for my wife and guests. I bought a couple of bottle today and needed to make room in my cabinet so I’m emptying these last of a couple of these basic pours. For a $20 bourbon, OF86 is not bad at all. Nice spicy vanilla on the nose with a hint of floral. Smooth and slightly sweet on the tongue as you might expect from the lower proof. Very short finish with a bit of lingering cinnamon. Local Total Wine had a few bottles of Eagle Rare at MSRP (limit 1), so I was able to pick one up. It's always a good day when I can find one on the shelf.

Kentucky Spirit is among the best. I haven't had it for a few years but it's excellent bourbon.

Tastes kind of like a lower octane rare breed or a long branch. Good flavor and quite smooth |

Decided to try out a bottle of Old Grand-Dad Bonded tonight, I’m pretty impressed. Definitely a bit of a sleeper at the price, $29 at my local shop.
Took a nip off the top of the bottle and it was way better than I was expecting for such a cheap bottle. Bit of burn, not much going on in terms of “extra” flavoring, but the biggest win is no “cheap booze” aftertaste. First drink was an old fashioned, since I figured it would mix well. Sure enough, makes a solid old fashioned. Again, nothing special in terms of extra flavor notes, but mixing it smoothed out the burn a bit and still no offensive notes. Next drink was adding a big cube to the glass, tossing in a sugar cube and a few dashes of bitters, then the bourbon and stirring. So a very low effort “old fashioned”, which ends up being more bourbon forward. Still solid. Just about finished up with that drink, next pour will be just the bourbon with a fresh cube. Expecting it to go down smooth since I have a slight buzz, will make for a nice nightcap. Overall, very impressed for the price. I’ll definitely keep a bottle around for mixing, it’s probably the best bourbon that I’ve tried at this price point. Cheers! |

Just wanted to post a pic of a bottle I found a while ago that I've only ever seen in real life once (and I bought it). Cracked it somewhat recently. It's good but, I couldn't honestly say it's worth the price tag (I paid $160 for it IIRC).
Attached File Still cool to find though, and I'm glad I was able to get it and try it. |

Were selling premade old fashioned drinks in these adult Capri sun looking pouches. I swear there was 2 or 3 old fashioned in one pouch. I had two pouches. Then we went to Luckenbach and listened to live music and drank shiner beer Enjoy. Fredericksburg is a lot of fun. Awesome German beer and food too in the area. |
