Why wasn't it killed by filibuster or otherwise? My memory is not good for that sort of thing, but it seems to me that at least a few (R)s had to play turncoat for it to pass.
|
|
I thought at the time there was a Dem majority in both houses. The first two years of O's Administration.
I'm certain there was because Pelosi was speaker, and Harry Reid was Majority leader in the Senate. Consequences, elections have them. Bush and the R's pissed away a great opportunity in 8 years. I don't hate George W, but he fucked us in several ways. |

The gutless republicans (and a few democrats who hated it too) refused to stand up to the "great one"
|
|
Reid changed the rules to allow it to pass with a simple majority ("Nuclear Option"). No "gutless Republicans" were culpable as the know-nothings claim.

Olympia Snowe allowed it to get out of committee. There were only 39 Republicans in the Seneate - Republicans couldn't do a filibuster. Scott Brown was elected too late. |

Its what happens with Democrat majorities. Since they are sheeple by ideology, they just follow along what the Obama said and didn't question it. They were all so in awe of the Obama that few had the courage to oppose anything he wanted at the time.

Sped out of committee.
Bill was being added to in the middle of the night. Cornhucker Kickback. Rammed through Senate with no debate. Simple majority (change in rules at the time) to allow easier passage. Obama signs with poor kid who's mother died... while on Medicare. Tyranny one step closer due to government intrusion into private commerce, restricting student loans, and a slew of other provisions that no onese got to see becuase they were "deemed and passed" in a committee sessions and tacked onto the bill. And plenty in the GOP stood up against the bill and the nation protested. Suggest you look up "Obamacare protests 2009" |

look up that idiot snow and you'll know everything.... Snow voted against it. Why do you not know this? How can you be so ill-informed? |

I seem now to remember something about it being "deemed passed," though I don't recall which house that was. That can only be done in the House and it traditionally had been for minor measures such as renaming a post office or a small bill that has no real opposition. But Pelosi was talking about using it as a tactic because she realized she was losing votes fast during the run up to the vote. Its also why she and the rest of the socialists losts in 2010. I don't fault you for not paying attention. That summer is when many of Americans woke up to politics and what happens in Washington for the first time. And yes "death panels" are real. Justed named something along the lines of "Medicare Review Boards" |

RINOs.
They give you theoretical majorities and theoretical filibuster power. But when the chips are down, they go and vote with the enemy. Simple as that. |

They took an already passed Bill, gutted it, re-added in the Obamacare statutes, and let Zero sign it. Original bill was an Education bill if I remember correctly. And yes, we should have marched on DC and started hanging people for this. We didn't. Amerikan Idle is on... |

The Democratic Party told all its members that if they didn't vote for it they would no longer get Party support. For the D's that were comfortable enough to say FO, they keep putting in things to buy their votes like the Cornhusker crap; that's why its 2,700 pages and totally incomprehensible.
There was no way for the Republicans to stop it as the Democrats had the 60 votes required to stop any filibuster. In the house the Democrats were in a very clear majority following the 2006 elections. |

But one of our RINO's showed her liberal colors and voted with the Dems. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1926005,00.html Again, RINOs give you "apparent' majorities and, if you're in the minority, you might want to count them as part of your filibuster count. Its a fool's errand to do so. They vote nominally "R" on some issues, they attend the caucuses (feeding strategy points to the other side), and they suck up "R" dollars for election campaigns, but on the great and weighty issues of the day, they vote with the enemy. It would still have gotten out of the committee. When put to a full Senate vote, Snowe voted against it. |

That's not how it played out and her vote did nothing to help it pass. It's funny you don't rant about the near 100% Dem votes for this debacle. Moby much? |

On a 14-9 vote? Oh, and did you read the post above which says what ended up as Obamacare began as an education bill when passed from committee? I don't recall if that's correct or not, but things are occasionally done using that kind of chicanery. Again––Moby much? |

There were many promises made to Senators that questionable sections would be repaired when the joint bill came back for final vote. That is, the first Senate version is almost always different than the first house version, a joint comittee hammers out the differences, and a compromise version would go back to both floors for final vote, since both houses have to pass the exact same bill for it to move on to the president.
Then Kennedy died, and they no longer would be able to pass it on the second go. So people watched in horror as the Democrats plowed the flawed Senate bill through the house. It was one of the more disgusting political plays I've seen in a while. And the thought of all the games, and the underhanded soul selling ending up for naught tomorrow fills me with a sense of justice. |
