Wikipedia knows all:

Libya: Purchased 367 F2000 rifles along with other assorted lethal and non-lethal weapon systems from FN Herstal in 2008, and deliveries commenced in 2009. In the 2011 Libyan Civil War, Libyan rebel forces captured a number of these weapons from forces loyal to the Gaddafi regime.

Prestige weapon of Western origin for the political elite.

If eveyone was running around with a crappy AK, toting around a modern, expensive piece would be a mark of distinction. I'm not talking about during any actual fighting of course, just during regular times.

You see that a lot in that area. AUGs, G-36s, etc. Just look at Saddam's sons.

Prior to the French dropping weapons to the Rebels; Libya, under
Ghadafi, purchased three-hundred seventy-six F2000 rifles for the Khamis
Brigade (formally the 32nd Reinforced Brigade of the Armed People, is a
special forces heavily mechanized infantry brigade of the Libyan
military. Commanded by Gaddafi's youngest son, Khamis Gaddafi, the 32nd
Brigade was called "the most well-trained and well-equipped force in the
Libyan military" and "the most important military and security elements
of the regime" in leaked U.S. memos.) along with other assorted lethal
and non-lethal weapon systems from FN Herstal in 2008, and deliveries
commenced in 2009. The export of the weapons was initially blocked over
concerns of proliferation into other volatile regions.

That’s a FN Herstal F2000, with underbarrel grenade launcher. It’s a
relatively new NATO-standard weapon, made in Belgium, and it fires
NATO-standard ammunition, the same 5.56-mm round as the American M-16 or
M-4. Mr. Darwish took possession of that today after it was lost by a
Libyan Army soldier as the rebels overwhelmed the airport.

I was
the only journalist in sight around the airport for part of today, and
when Mr. Darwish saw me he had his friend screech their pickup to a
halt. He jumped out and ran over to ask what kind of strange rifle he
had found. (How he suspected I might know, I cannot say.) Anyhow, I told
him. Where is it from, he asked. I told him that, too. And what kind of
ammunition does it fire? Same as NATO, I said. He was dismayed. His
questions were obvious enough. This came from NATO? NATO is giving
Qaddafi guns with which to kill us?

Same place as the camo uniforms, body armor etc lots of the rebels are sporting. Tunisia,Kuwait,UAE and Qatar are all supporting them, both with material and their special forces, blended in with the fighters. I guess the best way to spot them might be to see who is actually using their sights

Well,I'm going to guess that his English and understanding of what he was being told wasn't very good but uh,yeah...a NATO country DID sell those guns to Gathafi, mostly for the purpose of keepin' his people in line so I do understand the misunderstanding somewhat. For that matter, the SAS trained the Khamis Brigade...obviously not too well though.
