That's what I came here to say.

SGL-21 - $764

Case of Yugo M67 - $214.20

New Bulgarian Magazines - $9.95 ea

A case of M67 lasts me between 2 and 3 shooting trips, though, so you might want more.

There are better options out there with a $1000 budget mentioned above. If I HAD to go with a Romanian it'd be a SAR1, not a WASR.

I'd be going with this package if it was my money.

Not particularly fond of them. Poor fit/finish in the models I've seen, with a hearty dose of trigger slap being reported frequently. If I had to buy an AK tomorrow I'd head down to my favorite gunshop and hope that Saiga-12 is still on the shell. What's not to love about a 12 gauge AK?

Either an Arsenal or a 1960's Polish Milled.  Here's my Polish milled after a bit of furniture refinishing - and yes the bayonet was included.  Link to the Polish Milled thread.

Pic of 47-type 1960's Polish Milled sold through Century but built by ATM.  Bought from Henderson Defense because of the extra $50 "certified" option which guarantees the gun will be correct.  Still much less than $1000.

My other AK rifle is an Arsenal.

YMMV

If you shop around a bit, you can find the SGL 21's for under $700.  Watch Buds, Palmetto, AIM, and other places...
http://palmettostatearmory.com/757.php

If you want to go really cheap, get a plain old 7.62x39 Saiga rifle for about $350, and spend another $100 to convert to AK47 style.

Can't beat the Russians at the AK game.

Either a Saiga 7.62x39, or an early 90s Intrac Maadi.  The latter are ugly but they are fantastic shooters.  Built on Russian tooling.

If I had a $1000 to spend on an AK, I'd get two Romanian AKs from AIM, and spend the remaining money on ammo.

But that might just be me.

Same here.  My cheap Romanian runs flawlessly.  I have never shot for accuracy but the bullets go away from the shooter and towards where the barrel is pointing

If you like milled receivers, the Century Polish milled AKs are actually pretty nice.

I got one and it leaves very little to be desired.  I wanted an Arsenal originally but after seeing and shooting this one I wouldn't even bother.  I'm no expert on AK rifles and there may be better deals out there so take this with grain of salt.

Just buy a WASR. Buy it in person, and you can eliminate all of the annoying features (canted sights, mag wobble, etc) by picking out one that doesn't have them. AKs are supposed to be cheap. It's part of their charm. Paying $800 for one just seems wrong.

Besides, you can't treat it like shit and wrap it in green tape if you pay too much.
