AD AND CONDITION UPDATED. IT IS NICER THAN I REMEMBERED BUT STILL HAS FINISH ISSUES
Wards Western Field 47C .22 S, L & LR. This is a bolt-action, tube-fed rifle made by Mossberg and marketed by Wards in the "Western Field" line. Should be the same as one of the Mossberg model 45 rifles. 1930's manufacture IIRC.
$125
I bought this rifle mainly for its sights, but never got around to doing anything with them. The rear is the Mossberg target peep sight shared with several other models (MARKED No 4) and appears complete and functional except for one replaced nut (brass nut). Front multi-blade sight is a little floppy but could easily be tightened, I think.
The rifle is in FAIR condition overall. There is some finish left but a lot of speckling and old rust spots. I have not noted any real pitting. The wood looks pretty nice. The plastic trigger guard is broken but still holding as one piece. The original buttplate is missing and a smaller one is installed in place. The action does work and the magazine tube and plunger are present and functional.
The bore is great (shiny and smooth) and the crown shows no dings.
I took the rifle out to shoot this week and it worked great! Action and feeding were perfect. The posted pics shows Group 1 which is 5 shots of CCI Blazer (the first shot from the cleaned bore is to the right). Group 2 is 10 shots: 5 CCI Blazer and 5 CCI Standard Velocity. Both groups fired at 25 yards using the target peep sight. Not too bad for my poor eyes ( I need a scope for most shooting these days). [the tight groups are from a Savage MK II with Vortex scope]
