while it does no good for this years holiday mailing. I beg everyone to use tape on xmas cards, as the junk lickem glue seems to suck .. especially if you include checks cash or gift cards. I run a machine at the processing plant
that in it's processing gives every piece of mail a squeeze to test the mail for biological weapons. since these items get a squeeze and the are going through the machines at warp 4 I almost daily find cash, checks, gift cards, all throughout the machine
it is a tiny amount compared to the amount of mail run through this machine on a shift,, "178,000 pieces is not unusual" ,but I know several folks will not be getting what was sent to them because of this. if we can match an item to a letter then we do and wrap it in plastic and send it on it's way but in a lot of cases there is no way to id the item with the envelope . bottom line is that all mail goes through automated processes be it letters flats or packages and the better it is taped and sealed in proper packaging the less likely it will be damaged.
I have no idea what becomes of cash/gift cards that are not identifiable ,i just hand it over to my supervisor. checks can usually be returned to whatever sender is on the check.
