Swenson and his guns have been a hobby of mine for the last several years and over the course of those years I have been fortunate to own and examine some very nice examples of his guns. The gun shown here was the second in a series of Swenson guns I bought and the conception and history of this gun makes it a particularly interesting piece. I have already sold off one piece in my Swenson collection and this will most likely be the last.
The Swenson gun shown here was built on a 1943 USGI Colt 1911 frame that at some point in its ‘military career’ was matted up with an Ithaca slide. Jim Hoag once told me that he and Swenson would by these guns through the NRA for around $17 and build them into “good working pieces”. Once completed the guns would be sold as “spec” guns to someone who either wouldn’t or couldn’t wait the 2+ year backlog Swenson often had and instead was looking for a gun available for immediate delivery.
These guns would basically follow the standard Swenson formula for a good fighting gun and as such shared much in common with the “classic” Swenson guns without being full blown builds.
The gun being offered here stays true to it’s lineage and features the following Swenson trade mark touches…Squared and checkered trigger guard and 30lpi checkered front strapK-frame rear with dovetail filler and added second lug (original owners first initial of their last name stamped on the lug) Red ramp front sight and French bordered slideSwenson thumb safety and bobbed and beveled hammer Serrated rear of the slideRe-fit barrel and new barrel bushing
There is so much more to this gun such as Swenson's trigger job, reliability work, etc. but those are just some of the highlights.
The gun dates to the mid to late-1970s and features the markings that to the best of my knowledge Swenson used throughout the rest of his career.
The gun is finished in the signature Swenson hard chrome and is complete with the original hard chromed magazine and an exquisite pair of Elephant Ivory stocks, which were added by me. SOLD thank you sir!
