AR-18 was designed by Gene Stoner as a precurser to the M-16. The 180 is the semi-auto version of the 18. Howa made them for their defense forces, and all were full auto. After going to the M-16, Howa converted the 18's to semi-auto and imported them to the US for sale. You can see the '0' added to the 18 to make it 180 and digits added to the serial # as the original #'s were already taken for the full auto versions.
The AR-18 had a stamped "folding" receiver, and gas drive with gas piston, which is more reliable than direct gas system of M16, especially in adverse conditions (proven many times by AK-47). The lack of the recoil damper enabled implementation of the side-folding buttstock. The charging handle is located on the bolt carrier, at the right side of the weapon.
