I am new never done a 3gun comp. I recently sold my Ruger P85 with plans to upgrade and figured i would get something good for 3gun. I'm looking at a gen 4 G34, a XD M 9 5.25, and an S&W M&P pro series 9. What is everyones opinions on these guns? How is the warranty/ customer service with these 3 manufactures? I was at a shop last night and i checked out the g34 and the XDm and really like both, I haven't held a M&P yet. How is the upgrade support for these and what kind of mods would be needed to make each of these function well in a match?

Honestly all three would serve you well.  I'd say try all of them and see what you like best.

That said,  I use a Glock 34 for my competition gun.  Part of what guided that decision is because I carry a 19 or 17 for CCW.

I can't speak for mods for the others but the only mods on my 34 are lighter trigger, upgraded sights and extended mag release and extended slide stop.

If I had to start fresh, I would get the Glock 34. Lots of parts aftermarket parts and upgrades for it.

Does the weapon / pistol need to have a safety or can it be a double action with  no safety like a sig p250?

I use a Glock myself. When I bought it there wasn't as much aftermarlet parts for the XDM's or M&P's. Now there is. I love my Glock, but if I was going to do it all over again, I would get the M&P. Based solely on the Apex trigger for the M&P's. The flat trigger for them is one of the best I have used without going the 2011 route.

I went and shot all 3 and narrowed it down to the XDM 5.25"  and the M&P pro 9mm and I'm kinda leaning towards the M&P because I can't see where the XDM is worth the extra 200ish dollars.  How is the aftermarket support for the M&P pro 9mm? sights, magwell, mag extention, would it need a lightened trigger in the future?

The APEX guts for the M&P make the best plastic gun trigger out there. I'd go with the M&P, aftermarket support is good, you'll want a trigger kit, sights, mag extensions, and maybe a magwell, but that will keep you from using factory mags. I'd leave the magwell off personally.

Congrats. The Apex FSS trigger kit is awesome.  The only other thing you need would be extended basepads.

Is the Apex trigger kit something that I can install myself or would i need to send it off or take it to a gunsmith?

They are pretty easy, Apex has a bunch of Youtube videos online. Hardest thing I found was not loosing the take down lever retainer they are small.

It is pretty easy.  Watch their youtube video. All you need are a couple of punches and an allen wrench.

Extended basepads, trigger kit, magwell, and you're set on it.

Please elaborate on best after-market extensions and magwells.  Which work together and what is mix-n-match?  Does the extra weight of brass .reduce 9mm recoil enough to be worth the weight?  I am thinking it would vary by shooter but I think recoil is more distracting than weight for me when speed is paramount.

Taran Tactical(TTI), Arredondo, Taylor and 10-8 are a few of the better known manufacturers that make accessories for the M&P. A mag extension with a heavier base is recommended so mags drop free easier and for positive mag seating during reloads.  A good selection can be found at speedshooterspecialties.com. Aside from the Apex trigger and sear upgrades, I also installed an extended mag release made by 21st Century Gunfighter(www.21gc.us) on mine.

Hope this helps.
