how do the north face soft shell jackets fit in size?

I generally wear a medium in jackets, sweatshirts, and other clothing and I had to buy a small in my NF apex softshell. Even being a small I can wear a light fleece or sweatshirt under for extra warmth as long as it isn't too bulky.

soft shell tends to run small in my opinion . buy 1 size larger than normal

Yes & No. Apexes are sized smaller than other jackets I own, but there is a reason - I think. Most winter jackets are designed for layering. Usually if I wear a fleece, i will wear two layers underneath. Apexes don't breathe very well, so if I wear more than a t-shirt underneath - it gets uncomfortably warm. I'm 6'2" and about 220, and an XL fits me perfect. If it was any other winter jacket, I would probably say it's too small. But since I don't need the extra room for extra layers - the XL fits like it was tailored for me. YMMV
