im looking at getting an M1A Standard for my dad. Is the standard most similiar to the M14 used in the Vietnam era? also, is an M1A a suitable hunting weapon?

Yes and yes. May be a little heavy for hunting, but I'm serirosly thinking about using my garand which is heavier yet.
