I want to buy a Ruger 10/22 and convert it to a short barreled looking bullpup SMG style plinker, but do I need to buy a threaded barrel just to do it?

You could install something over the stock barrel, like a shroud, then you wouldn't need a threaded barrel.

I imagine that one has a threaded barrel.
You could always get the barrel tapered and have it threaded.

Check out the M4 supressor on MFIAP.com. The inner threaded adapter can be removed and it can be fitted to over any barrel that is the correct diameter (check with the mfg for specifics).  Not bad looking either.

Go to Guns N Stuff
They have threaded barrels and fake attachments for under $100.

Why don't you just have your original barrel threaded?  Mike Klos of American Mfg. does terrific work, and usually throws in a thread protector for $65.  I recently had mine threaded by Shadow Ops, I had the bbl. cut back to 16.25" threaded 1/2X28, and he took the original front sight and threaded it and timed the threads so that the sight comes back to center for $65 delivered.
