A friend of mine has an SKS and of course wants to put a 30 round clip, and a bayonet on it. But I'm not sure if the thing is a preban or not. It's got a bayonet lug on it, so I don't know if that helps.

Is there a link to someplace that lists serial #'s for Norinco SKS's? I so, could somebody post it for me.

I'm trying to remember if the serial numbers have a 9x prefix means the import year.

if the magazine is fixed your ok if its detachble u cant do it unless its pre 89.

I have never seen a 30 round clip. SKS clips are ten rounders, but they do make some 30 round magazines for them.

I had one made in 1967 by Norinco and imported by Poly Tech. I could not confirm its status. Some people said it was probably Pre-Ban, some said Post-Ban. Nobody could say for sure.

But, all Norincos are Pre-Ban of a sort. Norincos were banned from import in the mid 90s by executive order from Reichfuror Klinton.

If it doesn't have a detachable mag (ie. original chinese 10 or 20 rounder)it's not an 'assault rifle' under law and the bayonet is ok.

If you put the 30 rd. detachables on and have 3 other evil items (bayo, handgrip, flash hider or folding stock)it's classified as an 'assault rifle' (or you've made it into one).

Read the laws, 'cause I'm not responsible for ANYTHING. I took the muzzle brake off of mine so I could use the 30 round mag. (I have a folding stock and pistol grip).

Having owned several SKS rifles and done all sorts of things to them, I can say from experience that unless it is one of the SKS-D rifles that was designed from the beginning to use detachable AK mags, you should just keep it standard. The detachable mags with the gooseneck thing are not reliable and they are a bitch to carry more than a couple of them. The fixed ten round mag is very reliable and can be reloaded quickly fi stripper clips are used.

There are four accessories that are worthwile for the SKS:

- Stripper clips.

- Chicom chest harness for carrying stripper clips.

- Williams peep rear sight.

- Aftermarket plastic stock. The choice is up to you. I prefer the ATi Monte Carlo stock, but it is a little heavy. I used a belt sander to remove the cheek piece and reshape the rest of the buttsotck so that it weighs a little less and is more comfortable.

Another question to ponder: I have a shell deflector on my SKS (meaning I can't use the stripper clips). Is it legal to use 5- and 10-round detachable (gooseneck/duckbill/whatever-else-you-call-those-non-AK-mags) in Cali? I'm pretty sure I can't use the 20- and 30-rounders, but what about the 5- and 10-rounders? Otherwise I have to load one round at a time because of the deflector. Anybody know?

#1) To answer Ikari, Aren't Detachable Magazine SKSes Illegal In Kali. no matter what capacity ? I have never lived there, so I may be wrong.

#2) You can bring an SKS below 10 imported parts. If you do, it is only subject to the NFA, GCA, and 1994 AW Ban.

Wow, lots of replies. Thanks guys.
I'd bet this thing was imported after 89. But it does have a clip. So.....

......From what I understand, it's ok if my buddy has a FIXED 30 round mag AND the bayonet. Am I right here?

A 30 Round True "Non-Detachable" doesn't exist as far as I know. There used to be from what I heard an ATF opinion that there was no such thing as a Detachable SKS Magazine. I'm not sure if that was even true. Even if it was, that was a long time ago.

I saw a fixed 30 round SKS before the 2000 ban took affect at M&N Armory.

I snikered and bought another lower.

Thanks for the info, guys. I was pretty sure that that was the case, but it never hurts to get more opinions. Guess I'll have to put up w/ loading single shots till I move to a "free" state.

Civil disobediance at its finest and looking around the gun shows and ranges it appears most people are ignoring the ban.

Just my 2 cents, Ropes

Shit, I shot an SKS w/ Detachable Magazine at a range in Alabama right in front of a Cop and he didn't say a word. Then again 922(r) is a Federal Law.

You know, the SKS was made by so many different countries for so long throughout the world in so many different configurations, that you're gonna have a real problem trying to PROVE to the BATF that some SKS covered with Chinese characters, made in East Flung-Dung China is pre-ban. Unlike Colts and Bushies, were the establishment of pre-ban status is a clear, easy, black-n-white thing to do, doing the same with some God-only-knows version from God-only-knows-where at 3am in your Mickey Mouse underwear with a bunch of those black ninja-suited MP5 carrying dudes ripping your house to utter shit - will not be easy.
