Ok, here's the deal. I find myself with $500.00 and the urge to get my first NV rifle scope.

Now I know that $500.00 is not going to get me much, I'm just looking for a scope to use once in a while, to see if NV is for me.

I have checked out the ATN, Yukon and Dipol models, a well as read a ton of reviews, and I'm more confused now then when I started.

Please help me!!! :)

Thanks in advance
David

Whatever you do , DO NOT go with ATN as they are all pieces of shit. That being said, i would really save up more money and get a Gen 2. If you must go with a gen 1, Yukon would be a good choice.  With any gen 1, all your going to get out of it is about 75 yards of useful range.(unless you spend another 200 bucks on a varable ELR)

ATN, but they are so pretty!! ROFL J/k I couldn't find a good word anyplace about ATN NV product, besides from the people seling them. Would I maybe be better off with a head mounted mono unit, aditional Illuminator and helmet mount from Yukon, Rigel or Morovision, or maybe goggles from them?

HELP! this is getting worst, not better!

With Morrovision (ITT) be prepared to pay top dollar.  If i were you, i would get a D 300 Gen 2. You can wear it head or wepon mounted and it has great optics and a nice housing. They typically run around 1k. For another hundred or so you can pick up a head or helmet mount.

Wow, you asked the question I was afraid to ask.

I've seen AN/PVS-2 scopes refurbished and converted to AA by Morovision and have been wondering about the quality.  I realize the recognition range is pretty low, but since I can't see much farther than 75-100 yards because of trees and terrain I figured it would work fine.  Besides, I thought it would be appropriate on my M1A.

So, does anybody have experience with the AN/PVS-2?

Take the $500.00 and find a good mutual fund and start saving for something good. Do some research and hang out here you will learn a ton and good gear can be found somewhat inexpensivly if you are patient and look. I saw a gen 3 AB Night Vision mono that was a hell of a buy go on ebay for $1600.00

What about the Morovision MV-241M? It costs the same as the D 300 Gen 2. Also it appears that the D 300 Gen 2 doesn't come with weapons mount, and that costs another $150.

I've gone from $500.00 to well over $1100.00. Is this really needed for me to wack coyotes at our place in ND for all of maybe  2 weeks a year?

keep the answers coming, I feel the end is near!!

Thanks

Stick that money aside and add to it as you can.  Save it to buy something really worthwhile.  Don't ever buy cheap just because you have the money now... buy quality.  You'll never regret buying quality, but you'll often regret buying a POS.

I say this because I learned this lesson the hard way too many times before it finally sunk in.

Oh and for a scope, a new Aimpoint :)

Guess I'm just not ready for NV, but when I do get it, I'll have another nice platform for it.

Thanks for all your help, and when I get my NV, It will be the right one due to all the input.

Thanks again

If you are going to install and remove that flash hider, you really need to switch to a Vortex

The Phantom is designed to be indexed, and that will change with repeated installs/removes

The Vortex is also self tightening, so you could hand tighten it

In the grand scheme of things I truly realize that saving your pennies for something this expensive can be a pain in the ASS to say the least. I know a guy who is putting away for a PVS 14 and he works a second job as a referee making $50.00 a night. He carefully puts that money away and does not spend it. One benefit of doing this is once you finally have saved up your bankroll you will REALLY appreciate what ever you purchase, that much more.

To some night vision is a very esoteric pursuit. The ability to see in the dark is something that opens up whole new possibilities to ones endeavors. Just in the realm of play time, good gear is super fun. strolling around in the dark or hunting hogs (or anything else) at night takes on a WHOLE new dimension.

Put yourself into something serious like say, getting lost in the great outdoors at night can be bad, Really Bad. Or if your LEO or Military it can be the edge that lets you see the sun come up again.

I have told this story once before but during the first Gulf War myself and a couple of other Marines were separated from our unit and we spent a COUPLE of days walking across the desert at night to get back. We had no NVGs. I would have NO SHIT given a body part for the ability to see at night during that whole evolution.

So while some see this gear as a super nice accesory For me it has become an intergral part of my kit and I endevour to help others out in this same pursuit. Others here on this board will bend over backwards to do the same. Keep checking back and learning and when your ready, we will point ya in the right direction. So please don't take the comments of "save for something good" as us being snobbish. Like it has been metnioned above, regrets over not buying something good the first time around have been learned the hard way. So it is our hope to save the new interested parties from our mistakes.

NIGHT VISION HAS THE ALCHEMICAL CAPACITY NOT TO TURN LEAD INTO GOLD, BUT SOMETHING FAR MORE VALUABLE: IT TURNS DARK INTO LIGHT.

Oh Yeah NICE rifle that is an example of a good purchase right off the bat.

Realistically on your 500 dollar budged I'd look for a refurbed PVS-2 (depending one what you want to mount it on) It has the best gain of gen1 units, should be usable to 200 yds in lower light.

$500, I'd just buy a flashlight....

Seriously a few months ago I was looking to spend around a grand.  After talking to lots of people I doubled that and bought a used unit that ISPC Guy had made.  I'm telling you it is sooooooo cool.  I'm not repelling out of helicopters with machine guns but it is real cool to be walking my woods at night with my PVS14 (clone), AR15 with a laser and my GSD.

I own the night....

Really, save your pennies and buy the best you can or you will be all sorts of disapointed.

I'd have to agree with posters about buying quality once. I think gen2/2+ is a good compromise for 90% of cost vs performance. If you can double your budget you can get into gen2/2+.

Heck at $395.00 for a PVS-2 I may get one to go on an old A1 just as a piece of history.

Just remember to get a decent way to mount it. The scopes were EXTERNAL ADJUSTMENT, not internal like normal modern stuff. Plus they have a low life. But they do make a nice historical piece.
