I have just bought my first .410ga to give to my girlfriend as a HD gun in her apartment.

I was wondering what you would recommend as a good reliable HD round keeping in mind over penetration? Remember, she's in a apartment with tenants on two sides of her.

The only real good selection I have found is S&B and I know they are a lower quality round. Does anyone have a link to Federal, Winchester or Remington loads?

Thanks.

I have several boxes of the 2 1/2" Winchester buckshot but have never fired any. I have to put that on my to do list.

Mossberg sells a model 500 pump in .410 bore that has a 18" barrel with a spreader choke and a vertical foregrip for self defense. They recommend using 3" #4's in the gun for home defense. You might want to try some and see how they pattern. MIKE.

That is the gun i bought. The Mossberg 500E. Great little gun for the little lady.

I will try the recommended buckshot loads that you listed and will have a mix and match of slugs and buck for her to use.

Thanks Guys,

Do not shoot slugs out of the spreader choke! MIKE.

Wheeeew! Glad you told me that. That could have been a disaster.

I went and bought a 100 rounds of S&B 00 buck. No slugs (thank god)

Is that #4 birdshot or buck?  I've only seen 00 and 000 buck in 410.

No slugs?  Humor me.

Oh crap!  I didn't realize that!  I thought "spreader choke" was just a fancy term for essentially a back bore job.  Thank you very, very much for setting me straight on this.

Man, I would have been miffed if I found this out after I bought one!

Checking my .410 ammo stash i see i have
Sellier & Bellot 2 1/2" 3 pellet 000 Buck
Sellier & Bellot 3" 5 pellet 00 Buck
Brenneke 3" 1/4oz Slug (i believe the US foster type slugs are only 1/5 oz) The solid heavier Brenneke should penetrate deeper than the hollow based lighter foster slugs.
