Have him "feel" a Beretta 96 or the Cougar 8040.
I put "ho-grips" (Hogue Grips, rubber fingergroove style) on my 96 and it feels just right.
The Cougars have a different, but good feel to the grip.
Worth looking into.

Good Luck.

Get the Full size HK in 40.  I swear he will never regret it!

for me it's a toss-up between the Walther P99 or the HK USP Compact...
I've owned them both...the Walther was more accurate...but if you're into features the HK has the advantage

Any takes on the ruger .40's?

I have a Beretta .40S&W Elite w/ Brigidier Slide.  Very nice gun, feels good, not to large for hands, very well balanced. Comes with good sights.

The only .40's I have experience with are Glocks.  I have the G22, G23, and G27.  The most I have paid for any of them was $499.99 w/2 hi-cap magazines.

No complaints

Had a Glock (Model 22). Never got used to the feel and trigger. It is the only gun I ever sold and I have no regrets.

I know nothing about Ruger in .40. The Beretta 96 is a great gun within that budget. The SIG P229 is as good or better as the Beretta, but over budget for a new one. I also have a SigPro 2340, with both .40 and 357 SIG barrels. You can get the SigPro for under $500 and a second barrel for about $100. Rock solid gun and a great shooter.

Lots of good suggestions here.  Not a fan of the ruger.  They are reliable but ugly.  Good gun for the money though.  I agree, glocks don't feel right.  I hear good things about the P99.

I have and give two huge thumbs up to the HK USP (either compact or full) and Sig 229.

I would also recommend the CZ-75 in 40, or the taurus pt101 for a nice priced 40. I own both and love them. My only complaint is I get a bit of hammer bite off it.
I have looked at the rugers, but I think they are a bit clunky. Though if I was going to get one, I would be looking at the polymer frame one.

Springfield Armory XD-40.  I have an HS-2000, which is the same gun, except in 9mm from a different importer.  It is outstanding.  It takes some of the best qualities of the Sig, the Glock, and the 1911 and combines them into an amazing package.

Reports I've read on the 40 are that it is just as good, if not better than the 9mm.  Plus, it can be found for around $400 or even a little less.

$500-$550?
WHERE?I'd be very grateful if anyone knows of an online source or a shop that will take out of state orders. That's a killer price that I would jump on.

I have a Smith & Wesson Model 4013TSW.  It is aluminum alloy and stainless steel.  It is a sweet looking gun and more accurate then the heavy full size Model 4006 I had (which also had gunsmithing done!).  It is less the 27oz.  I must admit I only take it out when target practicing.  I ended up going with a S&W Model 642 airweight 38 special for a carry gun.  Was just easier to carry.

If you have 600 to spend DUMP the idea of buying a ruger.

Personally I'd go with the HK .40 the Sig or the Glock in that order...
