I'm moving to Alaska soon so I traded an AR for a Ruger M77 in .338 Mag.  Anyone have one?  Any opinions about the gun or caliber?

Great rifle, awesome round.  Now all you need is a Leopuld 1.5-5 and you are set.  The 77 is an incredibly durable and usable rig.  I wish my 77 had fiber optic sights.  I havent used them since I zeroed them and mounted the scope but just in case.......

Its a premier Elk cartridge. It is popular in Alaska because of bears..(same here in Montana to an extent).

a buddy of mine has a Ruger model one in .338wm, that is one incredibly fun weapon to shoot.  I love that round

It's an Alaskan standard and it is one of the best choices.

I have a Custom Lightweight with Kalhes 1.5-6x aluminum weighs 6 3/4lbs and shoots under 3/4 with factory ammo.

I've killed numerous deer, moose, caribou and black beer.

Awesome caliber for North America.

It's all I use anymore.   .338 Winmag does the job right.   I don't track real well; the .338winmag makes that irrelivent.

Thanks guys.  I'm probably going to put a 1.5-5X20 on it.  Maybe a 30mm.

Beer:

I'm shooting something very close.  Its a .350 Rem Mag.  For all intents and purposes they are pretty much dead ringers...  I've been using nosler Partitions and like them very much.

As for scopes, I'm using a Bushnell Elite 4200.  Big heavy scope, but I wanted some more weight for recoil reduction.  I also have a Leupold variX III in 1.75-6 and a Weaver GRandslam in 1.5-5.  Any of 'em would be great on the .338

Browning lightweight auto.  Elite 3200 FF.   Holds an easy 1" at 100 w/70.0 IMR 4350 & Noslers 225 Accubond.   Helluva Ctg.  Wish to hell I'd had one when I was in Alaska in the mid 60's.  Might add that the recoil is SOFT with the BAR.

.338 is one of the more popular cartridges here.  Some consider it the most versatile Alaskan cartridge with a good balance of range, flatness and smackdown.

Hit up the AK hometown forum and ask them guys in there as well.  Lots of good info.
