What one is the one to get. Is the .338 Lapua cheaper to shot then 50 cal ? A AR-30 looks nice in .338 Lapua but so does a Model 99 in 50.cal. Anyone own any of these rifles ?

Get the .50 and don't look back.

The .338 Lapua is going to be eclipsed by the .408 Cheytac round once it becomes widely available (2000 yard accuracy capable).

A .50 can be shot for about $1.25 a round if you shop around.  Real, custom ammo runs $3-4 a round.

IIRC--the Lapua is at least the high end of the .50 ammo (especially since there isn't a source of "surplus" ammo).

The Barrett M99 is a great gun.  If you like the  AR-30, you might want to look at the AR-50.

AFARR

I just realized you were in Canada--so take the numbers given above and multiply by 47.395 to get the cost in Canadian Dollars.

I have a Harris GunWorks Custom .338 Lapua.

It is a great rifle and a great round.

I bought it four years ago, before .338 Lapua was real popular.

I like to be a little different.

I think you can shoot the .50 for less per round, but not much.

I will try to put up some pic later tonite.

I have been reading about the Lapua for a while now (sounds impressive), but have never heard it spoken.  How do you pronounce "Lapua"?  Sorry, I don't mean to get off topic.

I would probably go .50 just for economy / availability.

That a ar-50 right ? How does the Model 99 stack up to it ? Is that a Leupold Mark 4 on the ar-50 ?

The 99 is lighter and I can actually shoot it standing. (Not that I would by choice) The AR50 on the other hand is very front heavy in comparison. Also in general... any given 99 off the production line will shoot somewhere between .5 to .9" moa. (So I have been told) Mine does around .7 or so.. so this may be true. Which tends to be a little better than the AR50; from what I have seen.

I'll let you know when I win the 99 at BRC in a few weeks.  My AR50 weighs about 41 pounds with bipod and scope.  Anyone can shoot it because there is hardly any recoil.  And it is very accurate.  <1 moa easy.

OMG, 41 pounds?? That's so frekaing heavy...i thought barret's were heavy bastards....

Anyway, yea the .50bmg is cheaper ammunition wise....but the .338 lapua guns themselves are cheaper. you can get a sako trg S for like under a thousand....great deal for a .338 lapua capable gun. But ammunition for the .338 lapua is few and far between.....Shoots accurate as hell though, as with the .50bmg, i have yet to find a place that can truly try out the capabilities of either caliber. Seriously though? go for a Serbu BFG-50, cheapest accurate bolt .50bmg out there, it runds around 2,000 with bipod and muzzle brake (u need the brake, God knows how one of these things would feel without it, i'd probably lose an arm and a shoulder....). Quite economical, and simply cool and clean. IMO barret is overpriced, unless u plan on getting the M82A1 it's not worth it since all bolts pretty much work the same. And if your not strapped for cash at all?? Get yourself a MA- Deuce....i've seen semi auto versions that are only 7,000 or so...and the neat thing? Theyre KALIBAN LEGAL...muhahahah

Forgot to answer...  It has Leupold Mark 4 rings.  Springfield Armory 6-20x56 scope.  Got it for a great price on Biggerhammer.

I believe it's "lap wah".  At least that's what a Finn told me.  I use Lapua ammo in my Hammerli 280 for international centerfire (.32 cal).  Great stuff!  The gun/ammo combination makes one ragged hole at 25 meters!
